Mrs. Monica Barrera

Art Specialist

Art and teaching are my passions! I've been making art since high school. I am a Dallas ISD alumni, and attended Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet, where I studied visual art. I received my bachelors degree in fine art from the University of Texas in Arlington. After making art for many years, I decided I wanted to teach art to others. In 2018 I became a certified teacher and earned my graduate degree in art education. I am so proud to call Mary Bethune Elementary my home, and can't wait to teach art to all the Bethune Bulls this year!

Coach Parker Cheney

PE Specialist

Welcome back to school! I am so excited to start my third year at Bethune as the PE Specialist. I am originally from Houston and graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Elementary Education. I am a big fan of the Houston Rockets and love watching all different types of sports. I can't wait to get active and have a great year! Go Bulls!

Mrs. Patricia Laman

Orchestra Teacher

I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin where I was also employed as a violin and viola instructor in the University String Project. I have a graduate degree from Texas A & M Commerce in Elementary Education and have also completed Suzuki teacher certification training in violin from Texas Christian University. I have 38 years experience teaching violin in Dallas ISD and have performed in various symphony orchestras throughout Washington state and Texas.

Dyslexia Interventionist

Hello, I’m Mrs. Avilés, and I'm so excited to work with the students here at Bethune Elementary. My mission is to assist students with dyslexia in the achievement of independent literacy skills by providing service and support to students, their parents, and school personnel through identification, instruction, and community awareness.

Hola, soy la Sra. Avilés y estoy muy emocionada de trabajar con los estudiantes aquí en Bethune Elementary. Mi misión es ayudar a los estudiantes con dyslexia a desarrollar sus habilidades de lectura independiente brindando servicios y apoyo a los estudiantes, sus padres y el personal escolar a través de la identificación, la instrucción y la conciencia comunitaria.
