Continuing our exploration of fiction, students will learn how authors develop thematic ideas in literature as well as how to analyze poetry for theme.
Students will also be analyzing nonfiction texts to determine central ideas, supporting details, author's purpose for writing and intended audience among other things throughout the year as well.
We will begin with metacognition skills - thinking about thinking. Students will be challenged to become active readers and interact with whatever text they are reading by asking questions, making preditions, connecting their own life experiences to what they are reading, using knowledge they already have to help them understand something new and constantly being aware of their own comprehension and knowing what tools they need to clear up anything that is unclear.
Next, we will begin to review and strengthen our understanding of a story's plot and how it unwinds through the various events of a story. Students will also delve into character types and character analysis and will determine how a story's conflict shapes the development of its characters. Students will be writing literary analysis and summaries throughout, as well as honing in on their narrative writing skills.
We plan to read 5 novels this year:
Among the Hidden
Navigating Early
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Phantom Tollbooth
Holes
Throughout the entire year, students will be adding to their vocabulary arsenal, 5 words and 3 Greek/Latin roots at a time. As their vocabulary is enriched and grows, their reading comprehension will also improve and deepen.
