WHAT IS "THE LONG WIRE"?
The Long Wire, translated as "The Big Wire", is an experiment that visibly transforms electricity into movement and sound. The central idea is to make a stretched metal wire vibrate using electric current and a magnetic field. At the moment, the project is in progress.
In practice, it works like this: when electric current passes through the wire and it is close to a magnet, a force arises that makes the wire move. This movement happens very quickly, making the wire vibrate — and it is this vibration that generates sound.
The most interesting thing is that this experiment allows you to see sound happening. Depending on the frequency applied, the wire forms patterns along its length, creating "drawings" that show how sound behaves physically.
In addition, the system can work in two ways: as a visual experiment, in which it is possible to observe sound in the wire through vibration, or as a type of “loudspeaker”, capable of reproducing sounds and even music from these vibrations.
WHAT WILL YOU FIND ON THIS PAGE?
In this section, you will find content that explains in simple terms how the experiment works and how it is built.
How the wire vibrates and generates sound from electricity and magnetism;
How these vibrations form different wave patterns in the wire;
How the system can work as a type of loudspeaker;
The process of assembling, testing and developing the experiment.
The content seeks to show, in a visual and practical way, physics concepts that often seem abstract, but are part of our everyday lives.
OBJECTIVES
The project arises with the objective of making the experiment feasible to carry out and easy for the general population to understand, as well as making physics concepts more accessible and easy to understand. By allowing everyone to see these phenomena happening in practice, the wire vibrating and forming patterns helps to better understand how sound works, how it propagates and how it can be generated through different processes.
