Science achievement at William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy reached a historic high during the 2025–2026 school year. According to North Carolina Department of Public Instruction accountability data, Davie posted its strongest science performance in more than a decade.
We believe this growth reflects our intentional commitment to making STEM a meaningful part of the student experience, both inside and beyond the classroom. Through hands-on learning, engineering design challenges, inquiry-based instruction, field experiences, and partnerships with colleges, universities, businesses, and STEM organizations, our students are being given more opportunities to connect science content to real-world problems and future careers.
This achievement is an important milestone in Davie’s continued transformation and reinforces our belief that when students are given access, opportunity, and engaging STEM experiences, excellence follows.
Expanding Access. Creating Opportunity. Inspiring Excellence.

Our journey toward becoming a North Carolina STEM School of Distinction is a shared responsibility. Rather than limiting the self-assessment process to a small leadership team, we intentionally engaged our entire staff in reviewing the rubric, reflecting on our current practices, and assessing our progress as a school.
Staff members first examined each element of the rubric within their grade-level teams, discussing the evidence currently in place and determining the level of implementation they believed was supported. Those conversations then moved to the full staff, where we reviewed the evidence together and reached consensus on whether it was strong enough to support the rating selected.
This collaborative process gave every staff member a voice in the work, strengthened our collective understanding of the STEM School of Distinction expectations, and helped us identify both areas of strength and priorities for continued growth. It also reinforced an important belief at Davie: STEM transformation is not the work of a few people. It belongs to all of us.
