Students in AP Lit will be reading and annotating (at least 50%) of Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This gothic-style novel has mysterious undertones and a touch of magical realism. It will keep you intrigued, particularly because there is a great deal lying just under the carpet - er, surface - to analyze.
As you read, annotate for the following:
Imagery
Symbolism (use the handouts to the right to interpret symbolic meaning)
Characterization/character development
Setting/mood
Motifs (recurring ideas) and themes (the author's implied commentary on a given subject)
Remember, annotations involve more than just highlighting or identifying literary devices within the text. Annotation requires you to interpret what is happening in the text and why it is meaningful.
If you have any questions at all this summer as you prepare for AP Lit, please don't hesitate to reach out to teachers Mrs. Fireman (lfireman@d94.org) and Mrs. Wirkus (kwirkus@d94.org), who will get back to you as soon as they can.
