Semester Goals
Students should be able to understand and reinforce the principles of positive self-concept development and efficient management of emotional stress.
Students should be able to identify high risk behaviors, understand why they are high risk behaviors, why they should be avoided and identify strategies to avoid.
Students should be able to understand the physical development, structure and functions of the human body.
Students should be able to develop nutrition plans based on their own personal dietary needs, while following government guidelines.
Classroom Expectations
1. In class when the bell rings, if not you are late.
2. Chromebook, pencil, binder and paper are to be brought to class everyday.
3. Listen and take notes during lecture.
4. Participate in classroom discussion.
5. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind.
6. Ask questions that are meaningful to the topic we are discussing.
7. Groups work should be done quietly and efficiently.
8. Students are expected to follow District 94 policy in regards to technology.
*Students will have 10 Point “Responsibility” Grade each week
9. Students must remain on task with in class activities.
Course Work Expectations
1. Homework: Will be assigned as seen necessary
a. Vocabulary and reading guides for chapter work.
b. Assignments are expected to be turned in the day they are due.
c. Students will lose one letter grade per late day.
d. Work will be accepted at loss of points for up to one week.
2. Quizzes and Tests
a. Body system, vocabulary and identification quizzes will be given as seen necessary.
b. Unit tests will be given at the end of each unit.
c. Reviews will be done before each test.
3. Projects (Points vary dependent on size and expectations of the project)

Units of Study
1. Mental Health
Self-Esteem.
Decision Making and goal setting.
Culture, media and technologies affect on health.
Communication and conflict resolution.
Define Stress and identify stress in your life.
Anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders.
Warning signs of suicide.
2. Body Systems
Including: Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Digestive and Urinary Systems.
3. Nutrition
Define nutrients and their food sources.
5 Food Groups and Choose My Plate.
Reading Food labels.
Healthy ways to manage weight, how to gain and lose weight safely.
Causes and symptoms of eating disorders.
Assess individual and specific nutritional needs.
4. Family Life Education
Describe the structure and functions of the male and female reproductive systems.
Learn the stages of development from conception to birth.
Explore pregnancy alternatives including: raising a child, adoption, abortion.
Discuss marriage and teen parenting, reasons to choose abstinence.
Discuss the effectiveness of various forms of contraceptives.
Describe and identify the symptoms, treatments and dangers of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
Define HIV and identify behaviors known to transmit the virus.
Discuss the testing and treatment for HIV and AIDS.
Discuss healthy and unhealthy dating relationships.
Discuss domestic violence, sexual assault and date rape.
Define the different types of sexual harassment and how to report it.
5. Substance Abuse
Discuss the immediate and long-term effects of tobacco use.
Discuss the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
Discuss the risks of using smokeless tobacco.
Identify how previous advertisements of tobacco made it an appealing product.
Explain the effects of alcohol on the body.
Discuss the consequences of drinking and driving.
List the 3 stages of Alcoholism.
Examine the physical, mental/emotional, social and legal consequences of drug use.
Discuss the different categories and classifications of drugs.
