English/Language Arts
We will be using the English/Language program, Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA). This program aligns with the Science of Reading and is divided into two strands: a Skills Strand and a Knowledge Strand.
The Skills Strand teaches foundational reading skills, reading comprehension, conventions of English, spelling, grammar and writing. Starting in Unit 1, Lesson 10, the students will receive spelling lists to practice their spelling words. At the end of five lessons, they will be assessed on these same words. By practicing the spelling words each night for 5-10 minutes and reading stories, the students should be prepared for their weekly spelling tests.
The second part of ELA is the Knowledge Strand. It is centered around complex narrative and informational read- aloud texts. It builds background knowledge and focuses on acquiring vocabulary, analysis of text, and speaking and listening.
Math
We will be using the program, Bridges in Mathematics. We will begin the year with Unit 1, Figure the Facts. Some other topics we will cover throughout the year will include number facts, addition and subtraction strategies, measurement, place value, and geometry. We will also be supplementing our math program throughout the year with extra units to enhance and support our mathematical standards and practices.
Science/Social Studies
We will be alternating between Science and Social Studies units. Science and Social Studies concepts and standards will also be integrated into reading and language arts.
