The city of Grants Pass thrives off of its artists and creative people who make it a better place to live and visit. The downtown portion alone is decked out with murals and small businesses filling the streets. Many of them spend hours creating art, making the city more beautiful with each piece. Many artists may be overlooked because they are not as well-known or are not recognized as being impactful in their area, but all artists are equally important. In Grants Pass High School alone, there are many people creating art of all sizes. They are so crucial to our community and they should have some recognition. I have found three artists to interview from GPHS who have personally inspired me.
Journey Spickard is a local sophomore at GPHS. She is obsessed with everything related to David Bowie and she already has her license. Her art style is inspired by more cartoonish and playful aspects of media, often using oil and acrylic mediums. Her art is based on movies and music/musicians. The piece she is showing to the left is a painting of the character HIM from Powerpuff Girls, dressed as Frank-N-Furter, with the quote behind it taken from Rocky Horror Picture Show. She chose to include the quote in memory of Tim Curry, who played the character Frank-N-Furter. Journey does not know what she wants to do for her future career, but she plans to never stop doing art. Her favorite thing about doing art is seeing her skills change and improve over time. The process of making her art is a safe space with creativity and music.
My next artist is Sicily Owens, who is also a sophomore from GPHS. They skate bored and love music. Music is a large inspiration for their art-- especially post hardcore and punk genres. Some top bands for Sicily are Alesnan and No Fx. Every time they do art, music is playing, and it means a lot to them. Growing up with music influenced everything about them, but it also made them want to learn music themselves by playing guitar. The picture Sicily is showing to the right is a hard-contrast pencil drawing of Courtney Love, the lead singer of the band Hole. Owens drew the picture in the middle of a big Hole phase they had. As for Sicily's future, they want to go into the field of psychology and maybe end up in art therapy as a permanent job. Their favorite thing about art is being able to show big themes in simple ways. Also, they show how art can impact different people in many ways.
Last, Amelia Roberts is another sophomore from GPHS. She was born in Florida and moved to Oregon in 2024. Her family is involved with the art space in GP, which has helped her to come into it. She is also crafty and taught herself to crochet and write crochet patterns. Much of her inspiration has come from nature. She loves bugs and animals, so she paints and draws them frequently. She does a lot of mixed media, but her most used mediums are watercolor and paper mache. Another fun fact about her: she submitted a watercolor painting to the city contest to be added to a power box. You can see it at 7th and Evelyn. It is based on the California pitcher plant. As for her future, she wants to do something with marine biology, but she will never stop doing art. Her picture to the left shows a big stag beetle she made using paper mache. It is at least 3.5 feet tall and is hung up in her room. She spent only two days making it. The reason she made it was to decorate her new room in her house to match all the other bug art on her walls.
