Reading is not just saying the words, but understanding what has been read.

Good readers:

ask questions when they read

make predictions

use their background knowledge

make connections

create mental pictures as they read

can summarize what they have read

use their "inner voice" to have a conversation with text

Students read books of their own choice as part of reading each day.
