Language Arts Curriculum Information:

We are using a new curriculum called HMH: Into Literature.   It is a thematic-based program that uses a variety of genres (fiction, informational) and formats (in verse, videos, short stories) to target the ELA  (English Language Arts) standards for reading, writing, and grammar.   Students will have a consumable workbook and digital access.

HMH (Reading/Writing)

• Consumable workbook kept in class (can be brought home, if necessary)

• Digital platform access thru Clever

• 4 thematic units with essential questions with a variety of selections and genres including short stories, poems, excerpts from novels, videos, etc.

  • Unit 2:  Never Give Up

  • Unit 1:  Discovering Your Voice

  • Unit 3:  Finding Courage

  • Unit 5:  Survival

• Annotation and analyzing text for literary elements of setting, characters, mood, conflict, and theme using text evidence

• Selection tests and unit tests

• Novel studies: Maniac Magee,  Iqbal, historical fiction book clubs (Lions of Little Rock/The Rock and the River) and The Outsiders

• Independent reading expectations

• Writing:  quick writes, extended responses, CERs, essays,  poems, and narratives
