Thank you for joining me as we continue through a legacy year in 5th grade!
Ms. Davidov
Each Friday, please look through any papers sent home in the back of their binder and student work on Google Classroom. Then please sign the blue side of the student chart to indicate that your child has shown you work from this week.
In my Math class, students need to work on 2 IXL skills per week and record their work on a chart in our Math Google Classroom. In Math, we also have workbook pages to practice on days when we did not take an exit slip. All exit slips are online and students can show you their work by pulling them up!
For reading, we also usually have a National Geographic Magazine to read and associated questions to answer. Often, there is an assignment list for reading to help students organize the work and budget their time.
On spelling weeks, there is a practice page to complete by Thursday. On the other weeks, there is a greek/latin list to study and their study-activity needs to be uploaded on the Padlet by Friday.
Everyday we work on a Science lesson. Anyone who is not finished needs to finish the activity/reflection at home.
Most writing lessons are also done in class, but often the homework says to work a bit more on it at home. Some perfectionists want to work for hours on this. I would say, no more than 15 minutes. The progress that I want to see each day is to move a little towards improving what you have, not from zero to mastery in one day.
We hardly have homework in Civics, but if the assignment notebook lists something, the your child can pull up the activity and show you it is complete to the best of their understanding.
All homework should be done by the students. Homework gives them extra practice to apply what they are learning during the day. You can oversee homework, but just have them reach out to me if you both agree that they need a lot more help to complete the assignment. The feedback the kids give me the next day helps me inform my lessons moving forward. If the homework is done for them, I will not know to help your child before moving on. I appreciate your help with this.
As we enter cold & flu season, please remember the following when your child is absent, whether that is a planned absence or a sick absence:
1. E-mail Ms. Davidov When you call in sick or relay a vacation to the office, the office does not forward this information to the teachers. If we do not hear from you, we do not know why your child was absent that day. Parents must inform individual teachers that their children will miss class time and classwork.
2. Materials You can access the 5th Grade math textbook and workbook online. Your child knows how to access Classlink > Textbook file > Think Central/Math in Focus > My Library to access their materials.
3. Mrs. Murphy's Math Class Also available online is the (Big Ideas), but not the journal. It would need to be picked up from the office. For assignments, please contact Mrs. Murphy.
4. Missing work Your child can follow along if they feel up for it by going to Google Classroom to see what is newly assigned that day. They can also follow our daily slides on our website. If they cannot print the documents assigned, they can write them on loose leaf. Students will be responsible to meet with me upon their return to plan out how to make up missed work.
Take a moment to open up your child's Chromebook, and have them show you where they can find their online textbook, the assignment notebook page, and Google Classroom. Thank you & best wishes for a healthy school year!
Thanks for your help,
Alana Davidov
We started by reviewing what we would contribute in our classroom to each other and to ourselves in order to create norms that we agree on. We have begun learning to recognize bullying by naming its' criteria and asking those questions about various scenarios. Our class discussions are robust and exciting!

What's happening in class:
Our current unit is studying: "What does is take to settle a new land?" We are reading books about westward expansion in guided reading. Students will be working on a play this week and next which will be video taped and shared!
Most weeks, they will have a national geographic Q/A, a guided reading book and/or a baggie book, work that relates to our class novel, and a reading skill to practice each week on Flipgrid. All of these assignments are done in class, but may need to be finished at home.
Reading Skill Practice Mini-Podcast:
Each week, the students will practice a reading skill that we learn in class and make an episode on Flipgrid of their podcast- dedicated to applying new reading skills to stories and experiences in their lives. Check these out on the student work tab! There are 9 episodes so far!
Baggie Books:
Students are also working at their own pace on a Baggie Book, each one comes with a different Reading Skill-based assignment. Students can work in pairs, small groups, or individually on these and they make their own schedules and book choices! It is important that your child reads daily and chooses a book they have not previously read that is at or above their reading level. Please let me know if you need help finding their reading level. Some of these activities are showcased on the Student Work tab.
Global Read Aloud: N/A at this time.
Author Visits: We enjoyed our visit with Kate Hannigan- see her books here! Order her books here.
Past: Christina Soontornvat visted on September 9th, introduced by our very own Brennan G and Abby D!

Epic Information: Our Class Code is: (llt4820) those are lower case L's
Order anytime and I will put it on through! The fourth order will be sent through at the end of the month!
The new fliers went home this week!
The class created hypothesis-goals "If I _____, maybe [intended outcome] will happen."
My goal is for all students in class to become more intrinsically motived for learning. Knowing the importance of learning can transform the effort given by a student and they are more likely to be successful in school moving forward, beyond the expectations of their teachers.
On the bulletin below, students reflected on what they are most grateful for.
Students will be constantly adding words to their memo pads weekly!
Every other week the students will use their lists to create their own 10-word spelling list and test a partner. Any words spelled correctly have been mastered and get highlighted in their memo pad. Any misspelled words will get carried over to the next week so they can continue practicing.
Look out for spontaneous prizes when you collect LOTS of words!
We began our Podcasting unit! Stay tuned for a list of generated podcast ideas as we will be looking to network for interviews and information!
Students began chapter 11!
IXL Weekly Chart: Please ask your child to show you their weekly chart. Early every week, students need to spend 15- 20 uninterrupted minutes doing the IXL diagnostic- this helps IXL generate recommendations for skills tailored to your childs' needs. We also utilize the Skill Plans section on IXL, where IXL uses our MAP tests to create a plan of action to move forward. Each week, every student chooses two skills from their plan, the recommendations, or from 5th grade on the topic we are learning in class. They need to work on each one for a minimum of 15 minutes each and with a score of 85% or higher. They record their work and reflect on it on a chart in google classroom.
It is time for our last unit of the year! We will begin working outside more as we learn about the Earth, the Sun, and our Solar System.
Click to see their Google Earth explorations, showing bodies of water, landforms, and climates from around the world.
We are exploring the lives of early colonists, our founding fathers in the American Revolution, and the constitution!
Although formal Social Studies lessons will not continue after Jan/Feb, we will be using NewsELA and other sites to keep up with current events, civics, and cultures from around the world throughout the year.
We will begin with the News. Voice. Power unit adapted from Mikva Challenge. Learn more about Mikva Challenge here.
Chrome books must be fully charged for class every day. Please charge at night and make sure the charging light is on. I recommend charging outside of the bedroom.
Supplies need to be replenished throughout the year.
Our HW is on the Assignment Notebook (in the student tab of this website) and shows what we are doing in class each day. Any unfinished class work is considered homework. Students in 5th grade should expect to have 60 minutes of homework in addition to reading.
Wow! In the past few years, students have learned an incredible amount about how to use their Chromebooks and the internet to, 1) learn new information, AND to 2) showcase their learning to others. By watching videos on our Student Academy and through activities that allow for open-ended practice, we will explore all of the following:
Online textbooks, assessments, videos and interactive activities within the curriculum
Google Classroom - finding information, feedback, adding assignment attachments, private comments, and more
Gmail- emailing teachers and peers respectfully and formally. Trying to remember to check email often.
Flipgrid
Google Tour Builder
Brainpop
Screencastify
Vocaroo
Jamboard
Pear Deck
Functions such as screenshots, split screens, sharing their screens, adding bookmarks, accessibility features, and more.
We will practice kindness and gratitude in our classroom.
Note-Taking: We will take a lot of notes in Science, Math, and Reading.
Organization: Each subject is color-coded so that all folders and notebooks match and are easy to recognize when needed. Students clean out their desks as they go and should clean out their binder and backpack once a week at home.
Time Management: Students follow their assignments in their assignment notebook and online (student tab of this website) and create smaller chunks of work to be done in smaller intervals of time before a deadline.
Progress Monitoring and Goal Setting: Students will decide their ultimate goals and brainstorm ways to achieve them. Students will be tracking their own progress in Social Studies and Math.
Reflection: On Friday each week, we reflect on our goals and progress.
