Vision

The MCVSD51 School Counselors work to ensure that each student will acquire the academic and social-emotional skills, post-secondary preparation and career exploration to reach their fullest educational potential through classroom guidance, small groups, and individual support.

A note from your school counselor...

Hello Broadway Families,

I am Emily Tinker, your school counselor. This is my 6th year in elementary in the district and I am looking forward to being a part of the Broadway community. As the school counselor, I work with all students to support success at school. I strive to build trusting and supportive relationships with students, families, teachers and community members.

I teach weekly lessons throughout the year that focus on social, emotional, and academic success. Topics will include identifying emotions, coping skills, being a good friend, having empathy, and problem solving.

In addition, I offer small groups where students will work with others who may be dealing with similar life issues. These groups will focus on topics such as executive functioning, social skills, feelings, friendship, etc. Participation in small groups will happen as students are identified and referred by their classroom teacher, parent/guardian, or by a personal request. Small group activities will happen during a time that is least disruptive to classroom learning, and will happen only with parent permission. Small groups happen for 6-8 weeks in the year.  If a student needs long term therapy, I am happy to provide mental health resources in the community.

Any student may come to the counseling office to speak informally with me about an issue that is bothering them. If I need to meet with a student more than once to twice on an individual basis, I will contact parents/guardians to provide permission. Please understand, school based small group and individual counseling services are not a substitute for community based mental health services. The focus of a school counselor is to support students' academic and social success in a school setting. I am happy to provide referrals to community based services. Please reach out if you ever have any questions about the program or if you would like to work together to support your child.

Sincerely,

Emily Tinker, Broadway Elementary School Counselor
