Together Inspiring Kids Through Art
The Art Heritage Program was born out of a collective spirit of resilience and determination. In the face of budget cuts that began in the 1980s and persist today, a group of concerned parents, educators, and community members rallied to keep art in as many classrooms as possible. Their brainstorming sessions led to what is now known as Art Heritage. This solution, a testament to their commitment and resourcefulness, has been the backbone of the program's success.
The Grand Junction Junior Service League initially funded the initial art supplies, wrote several artist biographies, and had members among the first classroom volunteers. Shortly after that, the school district, a key partner in our mission, supported and continues to employ a part-time program coordinator and assistant to oversee the curriculum, supplies, website, and volunteer training.
The program's heart and soul is a group of volunteers whose unwavering dedication and commitment to our students make them the true heroes of the Art Heritage Program. Each volunteer will present six new art lessons during the school year. The lessons focus on the work of well-known artists or significant cultural art forms. Each unit includes a comprehensive examination of the artist’s work, which may consist of the artist's life and times, along with a hands-on art activity. This diverse curriculum ensures that students are exposed to various art forms and techniques, fostering their creativity and appreciation for art.
Since its modest beginnings, the Art Heritage Program has blossomed into a significant force in our community. Today, Art Heritage is in nearly every D51 Elementary School, and with the unwavering support of over 100 parent and community volunteers, it continues to grow toward a bright future. We have seen students' faces light up when the Art Heritage volunteer enters the building. Our students know that when it’s their turn to have art, they are going to experience something new and educational.
