Hello and Happy February! The students have continued to improve on their reading and writing. We have also added on a presentation to round out their communication goals. This unit has been a great one about overcoming adversity.
It's so hard to believe we are 2/3 of the way through the year. It is truly flying by. Please contact us if you have any questions. Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming conferences.
Thank you,
Mrs. Foster and Ms. Lamberti

In Social Studies, we just finished Stolen Into Slavery.
Our next project is for Black History Month. Students will create a project to share with their classmates on a person who is known for the difference that they made in the United States. We will work on this several days in class but students may need to work on it at home too.
Students are still having a difficult time remembering to bring their headphones to class. Please check with your student to see if they need some for school. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Amanda Hull

Hello Everyone!
As we approach the Middle of January, I wanted to share an update on what we’ve been working on in math class. We will have our Sub-unit 4, which focused on key concepts such as Percent Proportion, Increase and Decrease.
Throughout this unit, students have explored how to identify and represent Percent Equation in various contexts. We are applying these concepts to real-world situations such as price changes, discounts, markups, and comparisons in data. Students are practicing how to identify the original value, calculate the percent change, and interpret what that change means in context.
Advanced Math: (Stacy)
In advanced math, we are working on the second half of Unit 4 - Linear Equations and Linear Systems. In this unit, students solve linear equations and determine the number of possible solutions. They also solve systems of two linear equations algebraically and graphically. Our anticipated Unit Test date for Unit 4 is Wednesday, January 14th.
Here is the caregiver guide for Unit 4.
Beltran Note:
All class notes for the week are posted in Google Classroom for student reference. Additionally, students are encouraged to use our daily agenda to stay informed about what we are doing in class, especially if they are absent.
As always, students are welcome to attend Math Homework Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays in my classroom until 4:30 PM for extra help or a quiet space to work.

Dear parents/guardians,
Happy New Year!
We are wrapping up the unit of Science on the Main Stage and focus on identifying physical change and chemicals this week. Additionally, we keep reviewing how to balance a chemical equation, which a lot of students should be proud of themselves because they know how to solve the problem much better than the beginning of the unit.
Our final test of the unit Science on the Main Stage was scheduled on January 26 for B day and January 27 for A day. It is also posted on homework page. Students were reminded as well. For preparing this final test, students should use their class notes and previous worksheets to study for it. During class, the main topics will be frequently discussed as well.
Moving forward, the next unit we will study to work on an engineering project, which is called Turtle SOS. Students are expected to build an incubator to transfer turtle eggs safely from the danger zone to a safe site. They will be working with small groups. More information will be shared out once we start.
Lastly, as always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I am here to help out.
Thank you,
Hannah Zhang

Hello families! My name is Jennifer Everett and I’m the Reading Specialist working with your 7th grader this year. I’m excited to support their growth as readers and help them build confidence and strategies that last a lifetime.
Quick Tip: Encourage your child to talk about what they’re reading, even just a quick “What’s happening in your book?” at dinner or in the car. Talking about books makes reading more meaningful and fun!

A Note About
PANTHER BLOCK
Panther Block is the first part of our day at GMS. During this time, students may attend band, choir, or specific individual interventions. Our school-wide focus for all students in a team-based WIN class is improvement in mathematics. Many students have the opportunity to work with their math teacher individually and in small groups, participate in reteaching of concepts learned in math class, and build skills that will prepare them for future success in math class. In addition, all GMS students have access to online math skill-building tools. For most students, those two tools are MATHia (connected to our grade level math resource) and DreamBox (a game-like tool that adapts to students' individual math performance), but can include many other online math tools determined by students' needs.

Mrs. Sell - sell.samantha@d46.org
Students continue to work on visualizing strategies along with the podcast " 6-minutes" during our bell-ringer rotation. We will continue to work on developing writing skills, with a focus on paragraph writing structure using the RACES writing model.
We are in unit 2, students rare studying argumentative writing. Students will read a selection of fiction and non-fiction texts, gathering text evidence to respond to the question, " Should the U.S use valuable resources to explore space?" Students will conclude the unit with a multi-paragraph response, in which they formulate a claim, and utilize citations from at least 2 sources. We continue to build academic vocabulary and expand our personal reasoning to express our thoughts in writing.
Please remember to look over google classroom with your student. Ask them to show you the work they are most proud of!
Samantha Sell

As a reminder, students have the option to correct work for additional credit, including assessments. Students can request a pass to see me during Panther Block, and I also incorporate time into class for corrections following the assessments.
We just completed our unit on proportions, and students applied their knowledge of percent proportions to calculate tax, tip, discounts and more! This unit had wonderful real-world applications. Ask your child to calculate the tip next time you're eating at a restaurant.
Our next unit of study will focus geometry, including 2-d shapes, area, perimeter, and circles.
Please remember to review infinite campus and google classroom with your student. Ask them to show you the work they are most proud of!

EVOLVE
Our SEL (Social/Emotional Learning) groups will run again this year! I am thrilled to be the 7 Gold EVOLVE circle facilitator! Our first group is Tuesday, September 30th, during Panther Block. Evolve is an opportunity to build relationships and friendships in a safe and fun environment. This first cycle will run for 13 weeks. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me at schmid.yvonne@d46.org if you have any questions about this amazing program.

Late Work: Late work is accepted without a point penalty until the end of the unit. Assignments turned in after the end of the unit are subject to a point penalty.
Homework Club - This club meets Monday through Thursday, 3:20-4:30 in the library. Students do not need to sign up to attend; they can come on an individual need basis. There will be no buses available, so students will need to be picked up.
