What is a School Psychologist?

School Psychologists are members of school staff who support students' ability to learn with knowledge of child development, the psychology of learning, behavior management and intervention, progress monitoring of students, and program evaluation.  School psychologists apply this knowledge using a problem-solving approach to help bring about positive changes in learning environment, attitude, and motivation. Services offered by the school psychologist may be provided directly to the student or indirectly by working with teachers, parents, and other care givers; however, all services provided by the school psychologist are intended to enhance the academic and social emotional success of students.  School psychologists promote the application of research-based psychological principles and practices that support the mental health and learning potential of all students in general education as well as special education programs.

Meet the DHS School Psychologists

Mrs. Annie Hlavin, S.S.P., NCSP

My name is Annie Hlavin and I am one of the School Psychologists at DeKalb High School.  I earned my Specialist Degree in School Psychology at Eastern Illinois University, and currently hold a National Certification in School Psychology through the National Association of School Psychologists. While I am now in my 21st year as a school psychologist, this will be my 17th year in the DeKalb School District. While I’ve worked in most of the elementary schools and both middle schools in the district, this is my 5th year at DeKalb High School.  I enjoy getting to know the students and helping them advocate for what they need to be successful in reaching their goals.  Please know that I am an available resource for both students and their families.  Feel free to visit me in the Student Services Department at DHS, or contact me at your convenience, at the number or email listed below.
