Math

Welcome Mathematicians of Team Invincible (Team 6c)! I’m looking forward to a great year exploring Math with students!

Curriculum

Our curriculum is the Common Core State Standards. These national standards have rigor and relevance dissimilar to any previous standards documents. We will use Big Ideas Learning as our primary resource. This is an online book with many dynamic and interactive features. Students will receive their online account information within the first weeks of school. This is a great resource in which children dig deeper into content and understanding!

Supplies

Each day, students should bring their Math folder & spiral notebook, calculator, earbuds, pencil, highlighter and colored pen to class.

Grades

Assessments will fall into two categories: Formative and Summative. Quizzes and exit slips are examples of formative assessments as they will provide feedback on student thinking, but may not be taken as a final grade. Unit tests are a summative form of grading in which student learning is formally graded and scored at the end of a unit. Students’ Work Habit grades will be compiled from assignments (homework and class work), preparation for class, participation and behavior. Scores will be posted through Skyward. I strongly encourage you and your student to be updated of progress by checking Skyward at least every 2 weeks.

Homework

Homework is the primary way for students to practice the skills learned in the classroom. Your student can expect to receive homework up to five nights a week. The homework assignments are posted to the Google Calendar. It is the student’s responsibility to access the calendar. Homework is designed to reinforce concepts learned in class and should take no more than 25 - 35 minutes. If your child is struggling with the assignment after consulting their notes and online resources, please feel free to email me or sign off on their work as a signal of their stopping point.

Homework Grading

Homework is graded upon completion. Students will receive full credit if their homework is fully finished, completed on time, properly labeled with work shown. Students will receive partial credit if any of these criteria are not met. Homework completion is reflected in your child’s online gradebook. Please refer to your child’s online grade to monitor their work completion and check in weekly for updated assignments.

Late Work

Students who fail to turn in an assignment on time will not receive full credit. A student who is absent from school will be given as many days as he or she was absent to make up the missed assignments. Any work that is not turned in by the end of the unit receives zero credit. It is your child’s responsibility to seek out his or her missing assignments and to turn them in independent of any teacher prompting.

Proper Homework Format

At the beginning of the school year, students will be shown the proper way to complete their homework at the sixth grade level. Each day, students will be grading their own homework in class (these skills will also be taught and modeled). Proper homework formatting contributes to your student’s Work Habits grade.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
