The purpose of a Number Talk is to deepen number sense and develop computational fluency. Number Talks can best be described as classroom conversations around purposefully crafted computation problems that students solve mentally. (Marilyn Burns, Math Solutions). They help to develop efficient, flexible and accurate computation strategies that build on the foundations of mathematics. Number Talks should be structured as short sessions alongside (but not necessary directly related to) the ongoing math curriculum. It is important to keep Number Talks short, as they are not intended to replace current curriculum or take up the majority of the time spent on mathematics. In fact, teachers need to spend only 5 to 15 minutes on Number Talks. Number Talks are most effective when done every day. (Number Talks, Math Perspectives, 2007)
It is a district expectation for all K-5 teachers to have 3-5 Number Talks each week.
