Welcome to 5th Grade Math. Math today is very different from how math was taught and learned in years past. This is a good thing! Today, students become true problem solvers and deep thinkers. The strategies and methods we use today help students to develop true number sense.

STUDENT SUPPORTS:

My dear students, if you are looking for help with homework, first go back through the problems we did today and notes you took in your math notebook and math book. These are your best resources! Next, just try your best. It is OK if you need to watch a video from the link below to review or ask an adult at home for help once in a while, but this should not be the norm. It is your responsibility to get involved during our time together in math class and ensure that you "get it" before you leave me. It's OK if the homework is a little hard. This is called a productive struggle and this is where the magic happens. OK there isn't any magic in math, but this is where the real learning happens, so don't be afraid of it. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

PARENT SUPPORTS:

Hello fabulous parents of 5th grade! Thank you for your partnership in helping your child achieve all that he/she can this year. Below you will find some tutorial videos that are intended for teachers. They are a great resources for parents to understand the strategies and methods we use at school. There are also some articles and sites with additional information to help you gain a bigger picture understanding of why and how math is different today.

If you are having to reteach the math at home every night, we need to get together and chat. It is the student's responsibility to get involved and ask questions to ensure that understanding while they are in class with me. Trust me, there is plenty of opportunity built in for this. Math class is never a place where students are chastized for wrong answers or made to stand out for asking a question. Math class is a safe environment where we support each other and lift each other up - never tear each other down. We celebrate questions, wrong answers, thinking out loud, etc. because that is what leads us to true understanding. It is more about the process than that product.

If your child is stuck on homework, he/she should first review the notes and work from class today in their math notebook and math book. If they are still stuck, they can go on to view a tutorial video from the student link above (with your permission) to jog their thinking. If they are still stuck, they can ask you a specific question. " I don't get it" is not a specific question. :) The student needs to state, " I don't know what to do with this 5", or "can you let me talk through my thinking with you and tell me where I'm making a mistake". This is a shift in thinking for many households, but while it may be faster to give an answer or do a problem for your child, it does not promote true learning or growth. I understand many parents feel they were not good at math as a kids, or feel confused by some of the strategies and methods we use in math today. Please explore the resources on this website and ask me questions to help us bridge that gap. I promise that your child can be successful and confident in math regardless of whether you have a degree in math or avoid it at all costs. Our partnership in keeping the student owning the thinking, questioning, and doing of math is key to growing their confidence and competence in math.
