12 Years a Slave by Solomon NorthupIn the book, 12 Years A Slave, by Solomon Northup, there is a man named Solomon Northup, born free in the state of New York who is tricked, drugged, and put into slavery. This book works very well with the first person narration by Solomon because he describes events in very vivid imagery to the point where you will feel like you’re in Solomon’s shoes experiencing every tragedy every slave and every crack of the whip. I highly recommend this book for people that want to understand more about the horror slaves had to go through daily and how African-Americans survived. Brian
The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon At age fourteen Brent Runyon comes home from a bad day at school, douses himself with gasoline and lights a match. Right away, he regrets his suicide attempt but for him it is a little too late. This book is a memoir of this young man who tells his story and how that day changed his life forever. In the book Brent takes the readers and shows them what day to day life is like for him prior to his tragic event. He begins to explain his detailed moments of being hospitalized and then goes onto his therapy sessions. Continuing the aftermath of his attempted suicide, Brent realizes his family and friends will always be by his side. The author really tries and connects with the audience that might be going through the same things he did when he was younger. He really grabs the reader with this traumatic and scarring story. I really enjoyed this book because he makes me feel every emotion he is going through, and that really made me stay with him every step of the way in this book. Read this book to connect on a whole other level than you ever have before. A memoir that is worth the read. Melanie
The Burn Journals by Brent RunyonBrent Runyon´s biography The Burn Journals, tells the story of fourteen-year-old Brent, a troubled boy that decides to set himself on fire. Runyon writes in his point of view and describes every thought going through his mind, from him dropping the match to his extremely painful recovery. It feels like the reader is with Brent as it is all happening. It’s captivating to see how this teen boy deals with a mental illness, such as depression and anxiety, and his thoughts through it all. This book is dark, uncomfortable and can be a trigger for some people to read. The descriptiveness can make someone drop his/her book and not pick it up again. Those who have weak stomachs or are easily disturbed should stay away from reading this as Brent does go into detail about his experience at the hospital. While it is a little disturbing, it is interesting to read since this all happened in real life, and the author of The Burn Journals is the one it all happened to. It is interesting to see how one´s future can completely change by just one decision. Priscilla

Pelé by James Buckley Jr.Would you want to know about one of the greatest soccer player of all time? Well, if you do then I would recommend you to read the book Pelé by James Buckley Jr. An absolutely fantastic book for the soccer fans, it takes the reader through the life of a poor boy born in extremely rural area of Brazil who then went on to become one of the legends of the game. The book is fully filled with the feelings of hard work, dedication, passion and enthusiasm. The way James Buckley Jr. has described the events of Pelé’s life gives goosebumps to the readers. It is a very well designed biography. It doesn’t just talk about Pelé’s soccer life, but the readers also learn about his outside/family life. By reading this book, one realizes what true passion is. Overall a very good book with so much to learn from. Parth
The Things They Carried by Tim O’BrienI recommend this book because of the emotions it gives to readers. The author also does a good job of describing the plot and Tim’s memories. The way the story told about the Vietnam War experience is also interesting and keeps you reading. While reading the book, the image that goes through your head can be disturbing and harsh during some points of the book. I felt love in the beginning of the book because the beginning felt like a love story. But later on I felt grief and terror because of the events that happen during Tim’s experiences in the war. I recommend this book to teens my age, but might not be appropriate to younger kids. Ryne
Tweak by Nic SheffTweak by Nic Sheff gets you to think and understand what a drug addict goes through: how he/she can think and how one can get up to that point and how it doesn't only affect you but also affects those around you. This story is the author's memoir, not fiction. While reading this and knowing that this all happened--that none of this is impossible or rarely happens or none of that--you get a glimpse of reality. That's something teens are missing. They want to live in a fantasy world where they believe that you can't get hooked at a young age and drug addicts are only adults and homeless people. This book shows readers how easy it is to get hooked and how one thing can lead to another and puts you through so many dangerous situations. You're playing with fire when choosing this path, and that's something people should understand and this book can. I mean it's a true story; it's something that really happens and can happen to anyone. I love the reality and the way it's written. Ashley
Tweak by Nic SheffTweak by Nic Sheff is a memoir on what it is like growing up on Methamphetamines. Nic Sheff takes readers through the horrifying, raw experience of dealing with drug addiction. This book makes the reader realize how different people think when they are using Methamphetamines. Nic takes his first drink of alcohol when he is only eleven years old. He smokes weed regularly throughout high school. He starts to mess around with cocaine and ecstasy which helps him develop an addiction to heroin and meth. For Nic, It's a constant cycle of rehab and relapse. He would check into a rehab center, but just a couple weeks after he would return to his old ways. Throughout the book, he believes he can stop and recover whenever he wants, but that is far from the truth. He goes on to tell how he would do just about anything to get the drugs, like stealing from his younger siblings. Drug addiction affects more than just the user as well as everyone around them. Nic makes the reader see that anyone could have a drug addiction, and it isn’t limited to just a certain group of people. This true story sheds light on how drug addiction isn't a joke, and it's a dangerous path to go down. Kathiryn
Tweak by Nic SheffThe book named Tweak is written by Nic Sheff. It is a thrilling, yet disturbing non-fiction tale of an addict’s life taking methamphetamines. This book describes the main character’s (Nic) life in first person. The story starts with Nic’s relapse in San Francisco. Throughout the story, Nic talks about how he has a troubled childhood and is now an addict and an alcoholic. Nic goes through not only his personal experiences with his addiction, but also his thought process. The reader gets a first-hand view of what addicts mentally and physically struggle with, and how Nic deals with these obstacles. Several times Nic explains why he relapses or why he tries new drugs or why he thinks everything is okay and in control. Nic talks about how most people think that this will never happen to them or they will have the power to stop and control themselves. The story shows the reader how drugs are destructive to the human mind and body. Small drugs such as pot can lead to methamphetamines, like it did to Nic. This heart-wrenching true story tells the dangers of addiction Nic, and many others, go through. Almost considered a modern horror story, the influence that drugs and alcohol have on one’s life is presented raw and as accurate as it gets in Tweak. Drug addiction can happen to any race, gender, and age around the globe. Nic’s story is inspiring, yet extremely depressing. It truly is a thriller. The author does a wonderful job conveying what it is like to experience addiction. With high-paced events that leave the reader disturbed and entrailled, this story is action-packed to the brim. Nic’s chilling story leaves a strong message in one’s brain. Hopefully it is enough for the reader not to make the same mistake as Nic does. Eva
A Beautiful Boy by David SheffThe book, Beautiful Boy, by David Sheff tells a heartwarming story about dealing with his son's drug addiction. He discusses the horrors of meth, along with other drugs that his son, Nic, gets into. What will really get the reader emotional is when he goes deeper into Nic’s struggle; all of his moodiness and how he is changing from the little boy he used to know. This book does a very good job of connecting with the readers because when they read this they'll feel like they know the author on a personal level. They’ll feel all of the pains and joys that David Sheff so vividly describes. Keep in mind that this is a memoir, meaning that it’s a true story that happened to the author, making it a lot more personal and touching. Overall, this is a good book readers will love if they are looking for a good, true story to read or are interested in the effects of meth on relationships. Marianna
The Boy on the Wooden Box by Leon LeysonThe Boy on The Wooden Box by Leon Leyson is an interesting book based on a true story. This book is worth the time to read and really pay interest in. The things that make this book intresting are the obstacles the author has to overcome like being split up from his family and having to deal with Nazi soldiers. In some scenarios the character Leon is tortured in concentration camps by being whipped over and over. There are also parts in the story that make this story heartbreaking and hard to read at some points. This book is a memoir for those who are in this terrifying time in history. It was dedicated to those who passed away during this timeline of World War ll in Europe. In scale of 1- 10 this book can be rated an 8 because of the events that occured. This is why this book is worth the time to read because it demonstrates the catastrophes that took place during history, and the descrimination it shows and demonstrates how it reflects to to today's time of day how people discriminate against one another for what they believe but not what makes the person. The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James BrownThe Boys In The Boat by Daniel James Brown is a very informing and inspiring read. Brown retells the true story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team and their journey to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Their journey includes much more than the grueling four hour practices on the frigid lake but their lives before as well. This team is made of poor farm boys, unlike the typical members of crew which were usually quite wealthy. Page after page the reader is taken back to 1936 during the Great Depression and experienced what life is like for those that struggled during that time. However, even through the struggle and adversity, the characters are stronger and more resilient than any author could have fabricated. Brown encourages the reader to take a step back and not only realize how privileged they are, but to recognize that anyone can accomplish amazing things if they are willing to bite the bullet and never look back. From a young age, he is very different from others and even poorer than most. He meets his wife Joyce in high school, and she is his main support system. After weeks and weeks of tryouts, he ends up in the freshman boat. The rest of the story follows the team and coaches on their path to the Olympics. This story is interesting because rowing is a lesser known sport. The things that the team has to do to get better is unbelievable. It is a very inspiring read. Lauren

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James BrownThe Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown is truly outstanding. It’s theme of perseverance and facing adversity is a source of inspiration not only for athletes but for everyone. The main character, Joe Rantz, displays an underdog story that everyone loves. From being poor and abandoned by his family to one being a part of the of one of the best crew teams ever. Boys in the Boat speaks of the popularity of rowing at the time when it was making headlines in sports pages along with baseball and college football. Brown also delves into the arising problems facing America during the time of the University of Washington’s run to the Olympics. He speaks on the dejected America during the Depression and the rising power of Hitler’s Nazi party in Germany. The depression affects many of the athletes that are attending Washington. They have to be stellar students and even more well-performing athletes to get into a place like Washington. Germany is described as a place of true horror, and it adds to the uneasiness of readers when talking about the power of Hitler at the time. Most importantly, Boys in the Boat describes the true aspects of a team. In a sport where so much comes into play including rhythm, strength, intensity, strategy, etc., teamwork is a huge component of a great crew team. Al Ulbrickson, the coach, instills the competitive juices and hard work that this world class crew team needs to be successful. James Brown shows readers that it's not just about the outcome of a sporting event that matters but that the homes where these athletes come from, issues around the world, and the insane amount of pressure put on these athletes to succeed affects a human being...and how a team can bring people together in a way nothing else can. Where You Left Me by Jennifer Gardner TrulsonJennifer Gardner Trulson experiences one of the worst tragedies in Where You Left Me anyone can think of; her husband dies in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. Before this, they are a happy couple, married for seven years. They have two young children at the time, Michael and Julia. Jennifer takes her tragic story and writes about everything she has experienced since the death. She's an amazing author who really takes the reader on the journey of her life story. Every emotion she feels throughout the book the reader could feel too. She does an excellent job on describing her grief, struggles, guilt and even love when telling her story. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone because I truly believe she portrays her story in such a moving way. It puts a perspective on life and how to cherish everything in life because readers don't know when they will lose it. It also shows not take the little things in life for granted and to avoid focusing on all the negatives and just to let go of any grudges because life is truly too short. Alexandra
Lone Survivor by Marcus LuttrellThe Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell is a great book for high school students to read. This book would be a great book for any students who are interested in the U.S Armed Forces, and it's an even better book for those who are looking to pursue a career in the military. The book is packed with a lot of suspenseful moments between firefights, old memories, and Marcus's will to live. The Lone Survivor is one of the best books about the bond of brotherhood and sacrifices; throughout the entire book the main characters show their respect and gratitude to each platoon member. This book really stands out from the other military books for one main reason which is that the author of this book is the main character. Being an autobiography makes this story so special because this event actually happens in real life; also, this book gives an insight into Marcus's emotions step by step throughout the operation. Marcus Luttrell is a former U.S Navy Seal. He serves from 1999-2007. As a Navy Seal, he is an SO1 which is a first-class special warfare operator. Can't Hurt Me by David GogginsThe book, Can’t Hurt Me, by David Goggins is a fantastic read for everybody, especially young high school students. This autobiography is about a man named David Goggins who struggles with the darkest times in life, learns how to unlock the heart and soul of himself, and put up a fight against occurrences only a selected few are able to do.. This book really helps readers think more about themselves, and hardens their minds. It will definitely leave a permanent stain in readers’ brains where for example: readers feeling a little lazy one day, and decide to skip going to the gym. Readers then think about what the novel has taught them, compare their situation to a Navy SEAL’s during Hell Week, and get their butts to the gym. There is plenty wise, necessary information that can be taken from this book that will help readers in situations where they feel like they’re struggling most. Most of the time readers won’t catch themselves in those situations anymore because the book references how all of their actions are based on the thought that one decides to go with in the back of his/her head. Everything is a person’s option and sacrifice, and is in his/her hands. Has anyone ever caught his/herself complaining about all of the little things? Reading the book will change this. Dependent on people or people who think anyone owes them anything in life will change by reading the book. People who struggle with depression or have hit rock bottom where they feel like no matter what they do will never get better with change when they read the book. It is a fantastic, bone-chilling read. 9/10. Cole

What Made Maddy Run by Kate FaganWhat Made Maddy Run by Kate Fagan is probably one of the most touching books. In this book, Kate Fagan details, in a respectful yet captivating way, the struggles of a high performing track athlete, Maddy, who struggles with mental health. This book gets a glowing recommendation to almost anyone as long as he/she is prepared for the roller coaster of emotions this book will bring. With Fagan’s extraordinary writing style, it’s easy to relate to Maddy and at times even feel as though one is looking at the world through her lens. In addition, she provides insight that has been backed up by research as to the effects of social media on the human psyche. Fagan clearly devotes hours to researching and backing up her claims so that the readers can know there is clear evidence surrounding the connection of mental health and college, social media, etc. All of this is combined with additional specific stories and descriptions which have been chosen specifically to illustrate the life and story of Madison “Maddy” Holleran, and it has been captured beautifully. China's Son by Da ChenThe memoir, China’s Son”by Da Chen, is a very empathetic story that is based around the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the life of Da Chen. Poverty is the main problem in this situation, and Da Chen lives through these hardships and survives. But when he is in poverty, it is like living through hell, he explains this through his experiences. Empathy is felt while reading about his journey because, poverty is the main hardship, not that many people in this current day and age can’t relate. Growing up in poverty can really hurt and change the way kids grow up, such as the following: what their outlook on life might be, what to do and what not to do, the necessities of survival and knowing who to trust. This book is adapted for young readers because the setting takes place when Da Chen was younger, but that doesn’t mean it's not for older adults. During the time when education was introduced in his early age, Da Chen realizes that education and a college might be possible, and the ticket to success. In order for Da Chen to be successful, he must get through many challenges. Nont being a communist in the era they are scorned and outcasted. Many of the obstacles come from lies; his reputation is already very bad but things turn out for worse when pursuing his education for success. His family also realizes that Da Chen is smart, and acknowledging he is, the whole family will give him a push with all the money they can sum up working in the rice fields. Knowledge means power, and if readers have potential in learning fast and doing things right, nothing is impossible in the field of education. David
A Stolen Life by Jaycee DugardThe memoir, A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard, shows the world is a crazy place. It is full of wonders and unknowns. What happens next is always a mystery. Growing up as a female and hearing the horror stories about kidnappings and various assaults done to women, this enabled so much fear. This fear can never go away because there is no true way to prevent it, but awareness can help. Nowadays there are so many shows and adult figures instilling these rules and stories into the minds of the innocent. The news always sharing a horror story and the viewers fear that, that could be them. Society now is not afraid to say things that in the past, were not spoken about. Either they are too scared to admit that it was happening or they try to forget it existed. Society spreads so much knowledge and awareness so that many can potentially be prepared and aware. Back in 1991, the world was is incredibly different. The awareness is limited, yet the horror stories continue. Young girls walking on the side of the road to get to school is seen not as a safety hazard and was common. Neighborhoods think they know everything about one another and the people around them. Some have secrets that are not expected and talked about in society. Mental illness is still a common disease and the spotlight is not on it. This lack of awareness creates so many hazards that can easily be prevented, and so many lives are saved. Time can not be reversed even if the time is tragically wasted. All of these elements are in Dugard’s memoir of her captivity at the hands of her attacker. Madison
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya AngelouMaya Angelou’s I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings depicts the life of an African-American person in the twentieth century. It serves as a lens through the history of what happens in the time when African-American people are segregated in the childhood of Angelou and the lifestyle of both worlds: the colored and white people’s community. The book can take the reader to a rollercoaster of the importance of family, the dreadfulness of discrimination, etc. Although Maya in her book admirably describes the harsh moment of her being discriminated against and degraded by powhitetrash people, she also includes the coming-of-age moments of her being on top of the Ferris wheel. Maya includes moments of her childhood where she doesn’t have to worry about anything else besides studying and not carrying the burden and harsh reality of the world. As an immigrant in this country, the relation of her as a colored person and dissimilar is no difference to the situation people coming to the US from foreign countries, even though things have changed over the past few years. Angelou’s book gave a glimpse of what African-American people’s struggles, but she doesn’t also fail to include how they use those hardships to conquer the deprivation and the stereotypes that the society has depicted to colored people like her. The title corresponds to the life of a prison bird whose wings have been cut and whose legs have been tied to prevent it from living a life of fulfillment. The caged bird depicts symbolically the plight of oppressed, mistreated African-Americans in the United States suffering from racial discrimination, racism, and oppression. Maya shows metaphorically how marginalized African-Americans practice their imagination drawing on their inner strength to relieve their pain while maintaining hope for a better future at the same time. Hence, Maya knows why the caged bird sings. Kervi
Biplane by Richard BachThe book Biplane by Richard Bach is a short book about his experience in life with aviation. In the beginning of the book Bach gives up the Air Force and decides to trade his plane for a 1929 biplane. He goes into the trade unaware of what conditions and looks of the biplane will be. But he isn't searching for a reliable plane, he’s looking for an experience. He wants to be able to travel back in time to understand what pilots before him experienced, flying an old unreliable plan. He hopes that, by flying this old, unreliable biplane, with controls he’s completely unaware of, will help him accomplish that. And, without a radio to communicate with those on the ground, he is able to simply experience life in the clouds by himself, wasting his day away in the sky on his journey. But for him, time isn’t marked by a calendar. He believes it’s measured by the advancements humans make, for example, new cars and technology. And by flying in this old plane, he is able to feel like the pilots that flew in the same plane decades ago. It’s all about experiences for Bach, and that’s exactly what he gets. He takes readers along these experiences of the struggles of relearning how to fly a plane as he writes every thought running through his head. Biplane, though it may seem boring at times throughout the book, is an excellent read about experiencing life and accomplishing your dreams. Kendall
The Kennedy Curse by Edward KleinEdward Klein's The Kennedy Curse is an excellent book for those who want to fall asleep. While giving an in-depth and thorough description of the lives of the Kennedys, Klein barely gives any more information about them that can be found on Wikipedia. Rather than going in-depth into the reasons why the Kennedys experienced such misfortunes, Klien focused more on their personalities and what they like to wear. Paired with flowery adjectives and weak inside-scoops on the Kennedy family, Klein blames Kennedy's misfortunes on an actual curse, not their dysfunctionality or their messed up lives: a curse. Full of nonessential opinions and conjectures, The Kennedy Curse almost resembles a historically based fantasy novel. However if one can get around the overly descriptive and at times objectionable plot, Klein does use an intriguing writing style. Sadly he has an unfortunate tendency to stop his intriguing narrative to give his unsupported opinions of scientific psycho-babble. Furthermore, if the reader can get past such nonsense, The Kennedy Curse would still be a waste of time and not recommended. Claudia
A House in the Sky by Amanda LindhoutThe book, A House in the Sky, by Amanda Lindhout is a dramatic, striking memoir of a woman who wishes to start over. During her trip to Somalia, she is abducted and held hostage for 460 days. She holds on to as much hope as she can and risks a daring escape. Amanda tells her story with a writing style that is both detailed and easy to follow. She provides so much detail within every page from start to finish. Consequently, it may get boring at times because of the events prior to this situation making it seem as if the book is getting nowhere. On the other hand, Amanda makes it very easy to put yourself in her shoes regardless of whether or not you have experienced anything even remotely close to her situation. The reader can expect to experience a variety of emotions throughout the book from feelings of sympathy to feelings of anger. Going into this book, one should be ready to hear about Amanda’s traumatic event but know that this story is not entirely upsetting. This book is recommended to a mature audience; a reading about an intense situation a person has suffered is not all fun and games. The way Amanda reveals what she has learned and what she wants to tell her readers is both enjoyable and motivational. The best part of the book is what the message and the feeling gotten out of it. A Stolen Life by Jaycee DugardA woman who has been through hell and back, Jaycee Dugard, takes her readers throughout a jungle of disturbance in her book A Stolen Life. When tackling a book like this, it is necessary to take it slow. Her horrible experiences expressed through the story takes time for her to experience. Dugard gives details surrounding her kidnapping, sexual abuse, and life as a hostage, all the while, finding a light in the dark, growing and developing a love for her two accidents. Without medical care, sufficient nutrition, and a safe environment, Dugard shockingly manages to push herself in maturing early to care for her two daughters. It is amazing all three of them survive. With only a fifth grade education, Dugard manages to set an education system up for her daughters installing a schooling time daily and making sure they stay up at night, designating homework for both. Consistently throughout the reading she writes reflexion, giving reality checks to the readers. This book is slow and repetitive, with pauses of boredom throughout. Paige
A Stolen Life by Jaycee DugardA Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard is a captivating book that will keep readers pages turning. The way Jaycee describes her time in captivity is an incredible story of triumph, bravery and hope. Jaycee tells her story as it happens, raw and honest. Some of the details she goes into are very hard to read. I recommend this book to only mature readers because of details she explains. The book will leave readers shocked and in awe at some of the things she endures as a young girl throughout her time being kidnapped. It isn't like any book readers have read before; it is a real life story told by someone who is locked away and hidden for eighteen years. It’s a horrific thing that happens to her, but she tells her story to the readers not for sympathy but as a story of hope. Jaycee tells it not ashamed of anything or holding back what happens to her, which makes it a very interesting book to read. Throughout the memoir she goes through some tough days of wanting to give up, hating her life, and suffering from a lot of loneliness, all the while being a teen mom held captive by two horrible people. Somehow though, she always finds a way to stay strong and keep going. This story is definitely something to add to a must reading list! Mia
Alive: the Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul ReadThe book, Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, by Piers Paul Read is a fascinating, adventurous true story about a rugby team fighting for their lives. October 12, 1972, forty-five rugby players and family members left on a trip; however, they never made it to the final destination due to their plane crashing in the Andes Mountains. After the plane crash only sixteen people remained. The book explains what people will do to survive and what the effects of isolation will have on a person. For ten weeks the boys were stuck on the mountain suffering from starvation and severe medical injuries. Author Piers Read uses specific imagery and diction to describe how the boys were feeling not only physically but emotionally. The readers find themselves learning more about what severe dangerous situations would do to someone and begins to feel for all the players on an emotional level. The thought of what people will do to survive holds on to the reader, even after finishing the book. The author is able to get the readers to look at life from a different point of view and become thankful for the things they have. This book will cause the reader to want to continue reading and learn more about the fight for survival. The men are the true heroes of the story and will gain the respect of readers for as long as time. Alive is a true page-turner that will change a person’s view on life forever. Audrey
Endurance by Scott KellyEndurance by Scott Kelly is a truly inspirational and interesting book. It shows Kelly’s struggle of becoming an astronaut and celebrates his successes throughout the struggle. This book is recommended for anyone working hard to achieve a tough goal because Kelly is someone many people can relate to. Although most humans have never traveled to space, most spend their whole life working to achieve a goal just as Kelly did. His rough start in high school (because of ADHD) means it is much tougher for him to be successful later in life (due to denied college applications at almost every school he applied to). Still, Kelly keeps an open mind and a positive attitude. He works harder than any of his classmates and because of this attains his dream job. His job as an astronaut is challenging and job offers not plentiful, so he accepts an offer to stay on the ISS for an entire year. He is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to live out his childhood dream but misses the Earth a lot during the mission. He misses the small things like rain storms and gras, and because of this has a new appreciation for everything when he comes back to earth. This book stresses the importance of appreciating the little things, working hard, and having perseverance. Because of this, Endurance is an interesting book that motivates and inspires the people who read it. Taytum
The Devil in the White City by Erik LarsonErik Larson’s book, The Devil in the White City, is a wonderful telling of two very different but related stories. The book operates in the 1890s and rotates between the life of Daniel Burnham, an up-and-coming architect in the city of Chicago, and H.H. Holmes, a charming and charismatic doctor and serial killer. The book begins by introducing the characters’ lives before the main events of the story. Burnham beginns as a drafter at a small architecture firm and eventually moves up to become one of the largest architects in Chicago. Holmes starts as an intelligent medical student and, through his charm, creates his own successful business. This mask of success is used to hide the murders Holmes commits. When the World’s Columbian Fair is brought to Chicago, Burnham is made chief architect, and Holmes is given the perfect backdrop for his murders. The book meshes Burnham’s preparation for the World’s Fair with Holmes’ preparation for his killings. This book is perfect for any person living near Chicago. The intertwining of the two stories entertains the interests of both architecture enthusiasts and people interested in murder cases. It is well-written but sometimes is hard to follow due to the different storylines it follows. This book should be recommended for all students in the Chicago-land area. Jason
The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan DidionJoan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking is a memoir by a woman who bears the loss of her husband and a sickly daughter. The memoir deals with various topics of loss, grief, and pain with an honest pen, a heartbroken outlook on the time that passes and the time that was. The book is chock full of flashbacks and thoughts that sometimes hits a little close to the heart. Using her skills as a writer and a journalist, she writes about the process of mourning in a way that, at times, may not be non-linear, but it matches her state of mind at the time. Didion is very talented, but at many moments in the book, her writing can get very tedious. Readers may find themselves fed up with the name-dropping of celebrities and long spiels of medical facts. It’s very analytical and clinical, but it is Didion’s style of writing and makes sense to the glimpses of her personality in the book. Depending on the reader, the memoir can be very boring or very close to the heart. Ultimately, a reader’s interest can be defined by their experiences in life and their opinions on the topic of loss. High schoolers can find it hard to relate to the mature and mournful writing as well as the premise of having and loving someone so much that it physically hurts when they’re gone. Anonymous
Helter Skelter by Vincent BugiolsiHelter Skelter, by Vincent Bugiolsi with Curt Gentry, is a good book. Helter Skelter is a true crime story about the Tate-LaBianca murders committed in the summer of 1969. Vincent Bugliosi, the author, was the prosecuting attorney in solving these murders, so he experienced the process of solving this first hand. Bugliosi is very knowledgeable in this case and proves this in the way he forms his sentences and how he supports them. Helter Skelter is not very opinion-based and mostly is a play by play from a broader perspective of the murders after the fact. Bugliosi does a very good job at keeping the reader informed. While reading the reader will not feel confused because every sentence has a purpose to set up the next or to give background for something else. Bugliosi sites his evidence well, and where there may be some confusion he puts an asterisk that leads to more information in the footer notes. The way in which the information is laid out creates a very suspenseful and thrilling experience for the reader and will keep them on the edge of their seat wanting to read more. Sometimes it gets frustrating in the way that the case is being solved because readers know more information than they did at the time. Ben

Stolen Girls by Wolfgang BauerThe book Stolen Girls by Wolfgang Bauer is a really good book for people who like to hear about the political news and history because this book is about real life events that happened in 2014. Not only does the reader get emotional reading the book, but he/she starts to get interested because of the traumatic things these women went through. Their stories are so real that it makes the reader want to read more because how sad and horrible this outrage was. Stolen Girls is about survivors ,both men and women, who tell their stories about their kidnap and escape because of the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram. At the end of the book I like that some of these girls who survived the violence and tell the reader about their strength now and how they overcame the fear. The book is also written in the format of stories from each of the characters and is different experiences throughout. For example, some of the chapters are “The Forest,” “The Tree,” and “The Bone.” These chapters are all about a place and experience for characters in the book that tell the readers. ‘The Tree’ is a chapter where one of the girls tells of her experience living on a tree and being scared because they were in the forest where snakes and other surroundings were a threat. The way this book is written is also helpful to read because readers don't get bored. However, readers have to be interested. Overall, it is a really good book because readers will feel a lot of emotion reading it because it's sad but shocking at the same time. I would give this book a 10/10 because I read a lot about something that happened in the world that I didn't know had happened. Leanna
