What is the Midnight Mile? The Midnight Mile is an Challenge Run here at DMS. It is where people on a team take turns running a mile for 24 hours. In the end, people run about 7 miles each.
To be able to do the Midnight Mile, participants have to train for six weeks. If they don't do the training, they cannot participate. Participants take tests in PE to see if they are keeping up with the training. The training is hard. Each participant has to be able to run two and a half miles! Nice job to everyone that survived the training. The DMS flag is carried by different runners for the full 24 hours. Fantastic job to everyone who finished and survived Midnight Mile. Finishers earned a survival T-shirt. If your mom, dad, or guardian ran the midnight mile they must be very sore, so thank them for doing that for YOU. Congrats! Thanks, to teachers, parents and espically the staff that organized the event. Volunteers make this event possible. Missed out this year? Grab a group of friends and go for it next year, because it was a very fun event the school had. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!
AI ‘Art’ Is Not Art
In today’s world, the words ‘art’ and ‘artist’ seem to range from traditional art, fine arts like music, to even dance. Nowadays, art can come in all shapes and forms. However, traditional artists have been facing an uprising problem.
Recently, people have been using AI to generate ‘artworks’ using prompts, saying that it’s “Accessible to all!” and “Art is art!” In my opinion, this couldn’t be more incorrect. The definition of art is “An expressive work created by the expression of human skill and imagination, typically in a visual form”. These are qualities that AI does not possess. People will sell AI generated ‘art’ for lots of money, even hundreds at times. I think this is, quite frankly, absolutely ridiculous. Getting hundreds of dollars for what? Writing a simple prompt, just for a robot to do the work for you? Excuses such as: “What if I don’t know how to draw?” Or, “Traditional artists just have natural talent!” are simply outrageous. You don’t know how to draw or paint? Pick up your paintbrush and learn, and if that’s so hard that you need a robot to create ‘art’, then you need to find a different profession. It is true that real art is not something just anyone can create, but art can come from any person. Art takes creativity, passion, and a human or living mind. I do not respect AI ‘art’ because it is none of this.
Why take away the human part from one of the world’s only real remaining humanities?
The chess club has been in DMS for a good month now! The chess club is focused around playing chess and having a nice time with other players. All grades can join, and you can join at any time! We stay after school every Monday from 3:45-4:45, and you don’t even have to show up for every single meeting. Even if you don’t know how to play, you can learn from other students, or our sponsor, Ms. LaGrippe. We encourage anyone to join, as it can improve your brain skills, focus, and it is overall a great time, every time. We sometimes engage in tournaments (within our group), which is even better to see where your skills are at and to see just how much better you can get! Invite your friends, or anybody in the school who you think would be interested to join Chess Club Today!
The DMS flag football team is an after school sports club that takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00. It is available to all grades both boys and girls. Though you may no longer register, it is a lot of fun! Flag Football follows a set of rules similar to that of regular American tackle football, but is contact-free, which makes it more welcoming to younger age groups such as middle school students. We get divided into different groups based on your level and preferences. There is a beginner level, intermediate level, and advanced level. Girls may also engage in all girls games if that is what they prefer or are more comfortable with, but can always join whichever level they fit into. Our coaches are Ms. Duffey and Mr. Jocelyn, they are very helpful and make wonderful coaches. Overall, it is a very fun club.
7th and 8th Grade Volleyball
The DMS volleyball teams have gone undefeated since the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, though they are no longer accepting new members in any of our volleyball teams, we should still acknowledge all of the achievements and efforts that the team members have put into the games. Go Cardunals!
Cross Country is a sport where you race long distances and it is a lot of work but so worth it! The team deserves a huge shout out for all our first place runners including the ones that won during districts! Great job to the whole cross country team for trying your best. The season is over, but you can always do it next year. Now if you pass by fellow DMS students in the halls such as Madden Legge, Bennett Angsurat, and Kendra Ayala congratulate them for getting 1st place at the district meet! Don’t forget the people that didn’t get first but did for DMS like Nolan Haas, Samantha Morler, and Magdalena Valdivia. They all got first for DMS! Let’s also recognize the help from Mr. Forest, Ms. Burgess, and Coach Haase. They all helped, supported, and improved the kids this year. Let us thank the 8th graders and their last year here. They have done great this year and good luck next year in High school!
