Cross Country at Niles West is a participation sport in that everyone has an opportunity to run in every meet. In addition to training and racing as a team, participation and personal improvement throughout the season is emphasized. The wonderful thing about competitive running is that it does not necessarily require special skills or abilities, simply the determination to run.
Distance running is critical to building fitness and endurance. Speed training (usually through interval training and tempo runs) will enable our runners to complete the race at a faster and more comfortable pace. This will boost confidence, as the runners already know that a pace can be produced in practice, helping them to simply reproduce it in a meet. Hill work and time in our weight room will also help the runner to build speed and strength.
Runners who set their personal goals for the season, work hard for those goals, and help their teammates in the process will reap the rewards of being part of this winning team!
