After watching the 3rd episode of America to Me, I was overwhelmed by the microaggression I observed perpetrated by allegedly "woke" white teachers on students of color at Oak Park River Forest High School. Equity work is very emotional work. To process my experiences, I frequently write poetry.

My inspiration is about my past experiences and moving forward. To be surrounded by those ones who are positive in my life, and cancel out all the negative energy and to become a stronger person by learning from my negative experiences and to never be scared to speak my truth. It’s also inspired by the movie “It” as it ties with the poem. How I am as a writer is somebody who expresses myself through writing and is comfortable doing so. It gives me an outlet to let my emotions and experiences out in my own ways to share a part of myself and to reflect on myself. To be able to lift a weight off my chest and be relieved I did is a great feeling to have.

I was inspired to write this piece because it is what I get frustrated by at school. What I wrote were my feelings about school, and I know many people would be able to relate to it. As a writer I am someone who likes to write about things people could relate to. I also love to express my feelings through poetry as a writer.
