This is our entry-level string ensemble, comprised of intermediate students and/or beginners. The curriculum introduces advanced positions, music theory, sight reading, and rhythm notation. Participation in the Solo/Ensemble contest in January, as well as attendance at all festivals and performances, is mandatory for all students.
The prerequisite for this class is Concert Orchestra, and admission is determined by audition. The curriculum emphasizes mastery of advanced positions, music theory, performances, and rhythm notation. Students in this ensemble must participate in the Solo/Ensemble contest in January and attend all festivals and concerts.
Auditions for Symphony Orchestra begin in the spring, and students have one month to submit three video performances: a scale, a musical excerpt, and a rhythm reading with clapping.
This audition-based group represents the highest level of string ensemble at Wheeling High School. Auditions for Chamber Orchestra are held at the beginning of each semester, with a minimum score requirement of 32 out of 40 points (80%). The audition includes a blind audition and the submission of a scale performance video. This ensemble performs regularly in the school and community, participates in festivals, and goes on field trips. It is a credit-bearing class held during zero hour on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students must be enrolled in the orchestra program during regular hours in order to be eligible. All students must fully commit to the zero hour class and cannot have overlapping activities or ensembles.
