For years, the dance programs at Vernon Hills High School have been without a space to call home.
You could find us rehearsing in a myriad of places, from the auditorium and gym spaces, to classrooms and hallways. Our resilient dancers made it work. They turned on carpet. They adjusted their spacing to accommodate furniture. They skillfully avoided ceiling projectors while practicing new lifts. They paused as people walked through whatever hallway they were assigned to rehearse in that day. They pulled staples out of their dance shoes. They found ways to create in less-than-ideal circumstances and still put together a beautiful final product.
You could say that this prepared them for their newest strange rehearsal space: Zoom. Amid a global pandemic, dancers were tasked with rehearsing in their own homes when they could not safely do so in person. Despite obstacles like unstable internet connections, delayed sound, and bedroom furniture, they again made it work.
Now that we are finally able to rehearse in the gorgeous new studio, we don't take it for granted. The vast, smooth floor and long walls of mirrors allow dancers to create in ideal conditions, and we are so very thankful for the opportunity. So, when we realized an in-person show was not in the cards for this year, we decided to film our pieces in our studio as a way to celebrate the inaugural season in this space.
We dedicate this year's show to all the dancers who yearned for this space, all the dancers who will enjoy it for years to come, and all the people who helped bring this dream space to life.
