In the fall of 2000, I started my career teaching high school biology as part of an integrated studies program. Since then, I have spent time teaching biology, chemistry, earth science, physical science and forensic science at the co-taught, regular, and honors levels at four different high school districts. It was through these experiences that I fell in love with curriculum development and instructional technology. Now in my fifth year as a coach, I am working to inspire others to provide Relevant, Engaging, Authentic Learning experiences for their students.
This school year marks my twelfth year at GCHS, and my first year as an Instructional Coach. In many ways, I'm grateful that this was my first job out of college -- the PD over the years and the guidance of my colleagues has taken me from an introvert who had no idea what she was doing in the classroom, to someone much more confident and able to share my passions with both my students and fellow teachers. I love finding ways to help students break down complex ideas, engage with their world, and ultimately find their voice. And, I'm excited to help pave the path to REAL audiences, assessments, technology, and instruction.
I started teaching in the fall of 2009 as an English teacher. In 2013 I moved into the position of Library Media Specialist at Grayslake Central High School after completing my Masters in Library Science. Moving into the library allowed me to work with more than just English, and reach into many content areas through the common thread of information science. I truly enjoy getting to work with all disciplines and all levels of students in this role and am always seeking ways to improve the information science skills our students learn in high school to help them be successful after graduation.
I have been teaching about 16 years in high school and college settings. I love teaching and learning. I love being a part of a collaborative community of teachers and learners of all ages and backgrounds. It is our differences that make us great! I am so blessed to be a part of the Grayslake community and work with amazing people and teach amazing students.
My undergraduate degree from Carthage College is in K-12 education with a focus on literacy and English teaching. My Masters is in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Reading and my Doctoral Degree from Northern Illinois University is focused on Disciplinary Literacy and Coaching, as well as teaching literacy to all ages. I want us to take our learning to the Relevant, Engaging, Authentic level so that students appreciate learning and are ready for the future!
