Working Lunch / Focused 10th Period
In order to support students who struggle to complete their assignments, McClure provides a Working Lunch period and a Focused 10th Period. Working Lunch and Focused 10th Period are two 30-minute supervised periods during the school day where students will received dedicated time to complete their missing assignments.
During the “Working Lunch” period, students will be assigned to eat their lunch in an assigned and supervised classroom while they complete their missing work.
During “Focused 10th period”, students will be assigned to visit a specific 10th period classroom where their first priority will be to work on a specific missing assignment only.
Guidelines
Students qualify for “Working Lunch” and “Focused 10th Period” when they demonstrate a pattern of not completing their daily homework assignments, a long-term project, etc. Assignment to “Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period” is at the discretion of the teacher.
If a student completes their assignment before the end of the 30-minute period, they will remain in the room and begin the current night’s homework.
The teacher will inform the student when they are assigned to either “Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period”.
The first two missing assignments will be counted as a “warning”; all subsequent missed homework assignments will qualify students for “Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period”.
For long-term projects, students and teachers should make a completion schedule fitting the assignment (i.e.—Break the assignment into manageable components that can be completed daily for an appropriate period of time.)
Students must turn in the completed work to the appropriate teacher’s mailbox or Google classroom at the end of “Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period” on the same day of attendance.
Late work that necessitates assignment to “Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period” impacts academic behavior grades, NOT mastery of learning (summative/formative) grades.
If a student does not complete their assignment at the end of “Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period”, they will be assigned to attend the next available period.
For example, if a student does not complete their assignment during “Working Lunch”, they will be assigned to “Focused 10th Period” that same afternoon.
If a student does not complete their assignment during “Focused 10th Period” and does not have it completed by the start of school the following morning, they will be assigned to attend that day’s “Working Lunch”.
If a student develops a pattern of skipping their "Working Lunch" or "Focused 10th Period" assignments, they will be assigned an after-school study session with Mr. Sturm that will last from 3:20 to 4:10 pm.
“Working Lunch” or “Focused 10th Period” are not for students who do not understand the work assigned and, as a result, need additional reinforcement, instruction, etc. Those students should report to the appropriate teacher for assistance. It is up to the student and their teacher to make this determination.
