Attendance
Reporting an Absence
When an illness occurs, parents are asked to call the school office (708-246-7590) or email (mjhattendance@d101.org) by 8:15 a.m. to report an absence. If no call has been received, the office staff will attempt to contact parents using phone numbers and emails provided on the parent emergency form. The “Absence Line” may be accessed if you call the school office, and no one is available to answer your call.
Please note that students are responsible for making up any work that they miss while away from school. They will have the amount of days that they were absent to complete their work. For example, if the student missed two days of school, they will have two days to complete their assignments once they return to school.
If a student has concerns about their ability to meet this expectation, they should speak with their teacher about alternate arrangements. Please note, these extensions are at a teacher's discretion.
Requests for Mid-Day Pickups
In the event a student needs to leave school early for an appointment, they must bring a note from the parent/guardian to the front office before 8:05am in exchange for a pass at the specific time to return to the main office. If a student is to be picked up during a passing period, a note and pass are NOT required; the student will simply take ownership of arriving in the office during that passing period for pick-up. It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to notify the school of the student’s absence prior to the start of school on the day of the absence.
With efficiency goals and avoidance of classroom disturbance in mind, the front office will not make a practice of calling to interrupt a class in session.
On average, a “page-a-student” request takes at least thirty seconds; historically, we have received an average of 25 “page-a-student” requests per day. This equates to:
Lost Instructional Time
12.5 minutes per day
62.5 minutes per week
250 minutes (~4 hours) per month
2,250 minutes (~38 hours) per year
Because the early dismissal of students is disruptive to the classroom and results in lost instructional time, we respectfully request that all early dismissal requests be processed through the front office before 8:05, so that we do not have to interrupt our valuable teaching and learning time.
Absences Due to Vacation
Prearranged absences (three days or more) should be sent to the McClure Main Office prior to the absence whenever possible.
General guidelines for extended absences:
Classwork is available on-demand via Google Classroom for each class. Work is not generally provided in advance of an absence. It is recommended that families either plan for 30-45 min per day for schoolwork, or time before or after the trip/absence dedicated to missed schoolwork.
Teachers will give notice and/or date of assessments to be taken before the absence or soon after a student's return.
We would encourage students to complete homework during their absence as much as possible. If students have not completed their work by the due date listed below, students may be assigned to either "Focused 10th Period" or a "Working Lunch".
