Director's Note
This December weekend, we are pleased to share space and time with you as UMD Theatre presents DanceWorks '23. If this is your first DanceWorks performance, welcome!
This year's concert includes work from many different points of view and lived experiences as we celebrate the principles of inclusivity: self-awareness, courage, curiosity, empathy, and vulnerability. Tonight's performance features over fifty UMD dancers and choreographers, our largest concert since my arrival in 2020!
Reflecting on the growth of dance in the Department of Theatre, I've witnessed our student body craving an immense need for connection. After feeling separated and siloed, dance can be a connective thread, bringing students together. It is especially exciting to see new participation from students outside the Theatre Department, allowing us to practice inclusivity as we include several new voices who wish to be heard.
DanceWorks '23 showcases many ways students are becoming creative and responsible leaders. Having watched the process, I'm in awe of how they have navigated challenging decisions while honoring their creative voices. The result has been to create a truly engaging concert.
I also want to welcome The Happy Tappers back to the Marshall Center Stage. It's wonderful to see members of our local community participating in UMD Dance!
Thank you for your patronage and support of DanceWorks '23. We're delighted to have you back in the Marshall Performing Arts Center!

Land Acknowledgement
The Department of Theatre acknowledges the Marshall Performing Arts Center is located on ancestral lands of Indigenous people, land that was cared for and called home by the Ojibwe people, before them the Dakota and Northern Cheyenne people, and before them other Native peoples from time immemorial. Ceded by the Ojibwe in an 1854 treaty, this land holds great historical, spiritual, and personal significance for its original stewards, the Native nations of this region.
