UMD Vocal Ensemble Auditions will take place Monday through Wednesday the first week of classes. Audition times will be posted one week before the semester begins.
Auditons are open to students from any major on campus. All vocal music majors are required to audition for choir and will be placed in the appropriate ensemble by the choral faculty.

UMD Vocal Ensemble Auditions will take place Friday, August 28th through Tuesday, September 1st, 2026.

Sign-up for a time HERE. Please email Lora Dixon if you have conflicts with all of the available times.
During the audition, you will be asked to:
Sing back a series of pitches played for you
Hear a chord and sing back as many separate pitches as you are able
Sight sing a short section of a song with a recorded ensemble
Improvise over a 12 bar blues 2x through with this track in F or this track in B-flat. Don’t worry…no one is expecting you to be Ella Fitzgerald, we just want to see you try! Feel free to use nonsense syllables or make up lyrics. (This Is optional but highly encouraged!)
We may vocalize to explore your vocal range.
Auditions will take place in Humanities 236.
