UMD Experimental Petrology Lab

Our group studies how magmas are generated in Earth's upper mantle, how they evolve, and what they can tell us about the composition of Earth's interior now and in the past. Primarily, we do that by performing laboratory experiments at high temperatures, both under atmospheric pressure and at high pressures, and measuring the chemical compositions of the minerals and silicate melts that form. We make magmas in the lab!
