When should I take my first exam?
Short Answer: The summer before you want to start your Actuarial career (internship or full-time)
The main recruiting season for actuarial jobs is in the Fall of the year prior to the start of the position. For example, the recruiting season for jobs and internships starting in May and June 2024 will be August - October of 2023. To get an internship or full-time job offer, it is very important to have at least one exam passed. If you are planning on taking an exam prior to the start of the internship or job, you should include this in your resume and cover letter and detail the steps you are taking to study for your exam. Exam P and FM are the first exams you will take, and are shared between the CAS and the SOA. Ideally, you should take STAT 3611 and STAT 4571 prior to studying for Exam P, however, Coaching Actuaries will do a wonderful job teaching you the exam material. You should take your first exam the summer after your sophomore year to be ready to secure the crucial internship for the summer between your junior and senior years.
CAS Exam Path
If you have yet to take Exam P and FM, disregard the 2022 requirements and look at the 2023 requirements (right side). The order in which you complete these requirements is not set in stone, and you do not need to have the VEE's listed at the top done before sitting for your first or second exam.
More information can be found directly from the CAS:

ASA Pathway (SOA)
Candidates must complete the full ASA pathway to receive their ASA accreditation. The exams are all the same for everyone reaching the ASA designation.
More information can be found directly from the SOA: https://pathways.soa.org/designations/asa
FSA Pathway (SOA)
You must already have your ASA before starting on your FSA pathway. Acheiving your ASA is the start to your FSA journey.
