About the Speaker:
Dr. Trachette (Tracé) Jackson is a professor of mathematics at the University of Michigan and is known for work in mathematical oncology. She is also the Assistant Vice President for Research - DEI Initiatives, and holds the title of University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor. This was awarded in recognition of her "extraordinary commitment to increasing opportunities for girls, women, and underrepresented minority students in STEM, through her teaching and leadership." She has won numerous awards including becoming only the second African American woman to get a Sloan Research Fellowship. She is a fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and a Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Fellow. She has pioneered numerous diversity-focused - and very successful - outreach activities at the University of Michigan.
About the Talk:
Mobilizing Mathematics for the Fight Against Cancer
Mathematical oncologists apply mathematical and computational modeling approaches to every aspect of cancer biology, from tumor initiation to malignant spread and treatment response. Much medical research is now focusing on the molecular biology of individual tumors to selectively target pathways involved in tumor progression. Increased understanding of molecular mechanisms that mediate the pathogenesis of cancers is leading to careful manipulation of these pathways, and new cell-specific approaches to cancer therapy are now being developed. Using data-driven computational models is a powerful and practical way to investigate the therapeutic potential of novel combinations of different clinical cancer treatment strategies. This talk will showcase mathematical models designed to optimize the use of targeted drug treatment strategies in combination with traditional chemotherapy. Combined with existing and newly generated experimental data, these mathematical models are poised to improve the ability to connect promising drugs for clinical trials and reduce the time and costs associated with transitioning novel therapeutic approaches from “equations to bench to bedside.”
The event will be moderated by Dr. Wendy Reed, Dean of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering. Members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions after the talk.

The 2023 Distinguished Visiting Speakers Series is presented by the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affair (EVCAA)'s Office and the Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (RSCA) subcommittee. The endowment supporting this series was set up in honor of Mrs. M. Concetta Marinelli and Mr. John Marinelli 'to fund distinguished visiting speakers at the University of Minnesota - Duluth campus'. Speakers funded by this endowment shall deliver addresses to the general public.
