I was recently asked to do the following work this summer:
Chair a Search Committee for new tenure-track faculty.
This work will require 20 hours this summer. Here is how I arrived at this number of hours:
Creating position description and shepherding it through to approval (8 hours)
Developing an advertising plan and shepherding it through to approval (6 hours)
Monthly meeting with Search Committee– 2 hours in June, July, and August (6 hours)
This work would be uncompensated because:
My salary only covers work completed between late August and late May (nine month contract).
I am compensated $7000 in the summer, which only covers the following tasks:
Teaching GEH 4321.
I am willing to complete the requested work this summer for $897.40.
I arrived at this amount through the following formula:
2022-2023 salary $70,000 divided by 1560 hours (39 weeks x 40 hours per week) = $44.87 per hour.
$44.87 per hour multiplied by 20 hours = $897.40
