what is love and information?

This 2012 play is one of the most recent works written by Caryl Churchill, one of the most iconic female playwrights to date. She has, throughout her career, amassed a collection of works that are wildly exemplary in each of their own, independent ways. This is a great description of Love and Information, which is split into 7 sections within which Churchill has given each production the right to order and re-order its scenes. These scenes are short snippets, glances into the lives of strangers in well known circumstances, and familiars in unknown ones. In doing so, she dissects where the line of the human experience is drawn: Is it between love and information? Or through?

Love is vulnerability on full display.

Love is not expecting anything in return,

but getting it anyway.

Love is tingly, love is tiring,

love is terrifying.

Love is risk-taking, but love is also

comfy sweatpants at the end of a long day.

Love seems to be a paradox.

~ Lauren Roth

"In this kaleidoscopic series of vignettes, audiences will meet 100+ characters in a variety of everyday - and not so everyday - stories of life, love, and the information that shapes us."

For Roth's directorial debut at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, we are brought Caryl Churchill's flexible play, Love and Information. Joining us from Los Angeles, she has spent the last decade working primarily as a voice, speech, and accent coach in NYC and LA, with recent credits on the Broadway national tours of Once On This Island and Waitress. She is a proudly certified teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork, an organization devoted to inclusivity in speech, language, and accent training. As Roth has had to roll with the punches right off the bat, we are excited and GRATEFUL to introduce Lauren and her direction in Love and Information.

If facts are pearls, information is a pearl necklacewhile the pearl can stand alone in value,

it's the sequencing that brings purpose and meaning.

~ Lilianna Micola, Assistant Dramaturg

Love is sharing with someone else

from your hopes and dreams, to the last of the jelly beans,

to the hardships of life, to the last bit of energy

to do something nice

without being thanked or asked,

to laughter over things

no one else shares but you.
