This scene is a nod to the training montage in Rocky III in which Eye of the Tiger by Survivor was playing. 

"And I’m not talking about shoe size or astrological sign . . ." (p.5)

A person's astrological sign depends on when they are born. There are 12 of them in total, and sometimes a person's personality is attributed to their sign. 

". . . or favorite Taylor Swift Song" (p.5)

Taylor Swift is one of the most successful music artists of our time. She has released 14 albums, including 4 re-recordings. She is currently on her Eras Tour, for which a concert film was created.  

"Why the Dragons of Earth, Wind and Fire put a killer album out a few years back." (p.7)

Earth, Wind, and Fire is an R&B and disco band that formed in 1969. They started out in Chicago. Their most popular song is "September." EWF won six Grammys and four American Music Awards, and they're still touring today. 

"Let me reiterate, that’s an S.A.T. word for “saying again,”" (p.12)

The S.A.T. is a standardized test administered by College Board for many high schoolers looking to apply to colleges. 

"Oh well, they all can’t win Tonys, can they?" (p.13)

The Tony Awards are a way to recognize different categories of Broadway theatre. There are multiple acting awards in the performance category, for musicals and straight plays like. 

"Even Nobel prize winning scientists bust their smarty pants trying to get it." (p.14)

Nobel prizes recognize people who make major contributions in five different areas; Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace.  

"Jurassic Park?" (p.17)

Jurassic Park is a 1993 film directed by Steven Spielberg that features genetically modified dinosaurs on an island theme park. The dinosaurs get out of their cages, causing disaster and chaos. 

"Get a boat and fill it with tacos"

BOY and LEROY imitate the iconic pose from the 1997 film Titanic. (p.19)

This is a nod to the scene in Titanic where Jack and Rose, the couple in the movie, visit the bow of the boat and pose like this.
