The integrated degree program (IDP) offers students the opportunity to earn both a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree in as little as five years. The IDP program offers the benefits of a streamlined pathway from the undergraduate to the graduate program and flexibility in fulfilling required courses for both degrees during the senior year; up to 9 credits (5xxx courses) can be applied to the MS degree. Students typically apply to the integrated degree program in the spring of their junior year.
Be a current UMD Civil Engineering CE students who:
has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.35
provides letters of recommendation from two Civil Engineering faculty members
has a Civil Engineering faculty advisor selected prior to admission
Plan A / Thesis Option: 18 course credits (- up to 9 double-counted) + 2 prof. practice seminar credits + 10 thesis credits; or
Plan B / Coursework Option: 24 course credits (- up to 9 double-counted) + 2 prof. practice seminar credits + 4 project credits
See the CE M.S. Catalog for detailed information
Students must apply to the IDP program at least two semesters before completing their BS degree in Civil Engineering. Students must be admitted to the IDP program prior to taking courses that will count toward the MS degree.
Application deadlines for IDP: April 15th for Fall admission or October 15th for Spring admission
Check out the Civil Engineering website for more information about the graduate and research program at UMD. You will find information about graduate research areas, links to graduate faculty advisor profiles, information about Plan A vs Plan B programs, and Application Instructions.

How much will an MS degree cost? Plan B IDP students can finish their degree in as little as one year. For 2025-2026, the in-state graduate tuition rate was $21,280 and (approximately) $2080 in student fees for the year. See the tuition information page and graduate school fees page for the most up to date information.
Is funding available? Most Pan A students are funded as research and teaching assistants (including tuition). Most Plan B students pay their own way or work with their employer to pay for graduate tuition.
Is an MS degree worth the cost? The salary of MS graduates in the second year after graduation is, on average, 13% higher than the salary of BS graduates in the fourth year after graduation.
