This, the 62nd Annual Student Exhibition, is our first "virtual" one. This year we are "looking both ways" by celebrating the history of the visual arts at UMD and by looking to our bright future. The first Annual Spring Exhibition, now known as the Annual Student Exhibition or ASE, was held from May 26 through June 30th, 1958. Over the years, this annual event has showcased the very best work created by students enrolled in visual arts classes at UMD.
In a Statesman article from May of 1991, Mark St. Louis remarked that that the Annual Student Art Exhibition "stirs emotion" and that many of the pieces "exude a somber tone" as many of the artists drew inspiration from the world around them. Much the same can be said of the 83 pieces selected by the jurors from the more than 300 submissions this year.\
Although the Annual Student Exhibition began before the construction and opening of the Tweed Museum of Art, over the decades the museum staff and the Department of Art & Design have worked more and more closely. This relationship is an important part of our history but also a foundation upon which we will continue to build in the future.
