FOOD AND IDENTITY UNIT 2023

Welcome to the 2023 Food and Identity Unit

The sixth grade enjoyed our interdisciplinary unit on identity. This past January, we spent time looking at identity through food. Each “MESH” class -- math, English, science, and history -- contributed time and skills to exploring several questions regarding how part of our students’ identities is linked to the foods that they eat. Throughout this unit, the students developed an answer to our guiding question, “How are we what we eat?”

To help answer our guiding question, students created the individual pages found here on this Google Site.

In both English and history, the students reflected on a dish that was important to their family and/or culture, and then they wrote about it using descriptive, vivid language.

In science class, students studied what makes up the food they eat, and then they looked more closely at the recipe they selected.

In math class, students collected data about the food they consumed in a week and created a data visualization exercise, integrating both math and art.

You can find all of the student work on their individual pages.
We hope you enjoy reading them!
