In Functional Reading, students learn practical reading skills that help them navigate everyday life independently and safely. Instead of focusing heavily on literary analysis or academic texts, functional reading emphasizes real-world applications of reading. In addition to reading comprehension, phonics and sight words, topics covered can include:
Signs and symbols: Stop signs, restroom signs, caution signs, handicap signs.
Schedules and calendars: Reading class schedules, bus timetables.
Menus and food labels: Understanding menu items, prices, ingredients.
Recipes and cooking instructions: Simple step-by-step reading for cooking tasks.
Reading and writing personal info: Name, address, phone number, emergency contact
Filling out simple forms: Job applications, medical forms, sign-in sheets.
Reading warning labels and instructions: On medications, cleaning supplies.
Following directions and maps: Street signs, directional arrows, bus route maps.
Reading prices and sale signs: Recognizing cost comparisons and discounts.
Reading receipts: Understanding itemized purchases and total costs.
Understanding product labels: Brand vs. generic, quantity, and usage.
In Vocational Skills, students learn essential job-related skills to help them succeed in the workplace and live more independently. Vocational Skills classes cover topics such as resume writing, preparing for interviews, workplace communication, time management, and basic job responsibilities in order to build confidence, develop employability skills, and prepare students for real-world work environments.
