When you are a beginner in the world of sketching and art, and want to take it seriously, there are some things by which you will need. Keep in mind that this is all here only if you want your picture to have a large variety of
For starters, you need to know the different varieties of pencils that there are in order to help you sketch in different forms and styles. When sketching, most beginners start off with a NO. #2 pencil. These kinds of pencils are fine to use, but you might want to have a variety of pencils in order to have different results of the same art design. In the Video below, LZM Studios explains the different variety of pencils that are located in the Derwent Graphic 24 Set and why she recommends that brand. Personally, I use lead pencils when tracing the desired outline for my sketches, but hey! It's just my own personal opinion and input on this. Feel free to use whatever is best for you.
In the image to the left, you will find that there is a link that leads to a YouTube video where LZM Studios recommends this pack and also talks more in depth about the uses for the different kinds of pencils. In the video on the right, you will find that LZM Studios talks about what she uses in order to do all of her sketches.
You will also find that you will need a specific kind of paper in order to have a different result of the same image. For example, you will need to know the difference between newsprint paper and rag paper in order to understand the different variety's of paper that then result into different kinds of versions of the same image. For example, you might have a normal every day piece of paper in order to sketch, but if you want a really amazing result and still have the paper be in good condition, you might want to use a cotton fibber paper. Others might prefer working with Bristol paper due to it being mainly used in order to present finished artworks and has a better for of presenting itself. Below, you will find some examples on the two different kinds of papers that are used for sketching.
This one helps show the main different kinds of paper that are used when sketching.
This paper is known as A3 Cream Cartage paper. Most people use it to be the starter for their sketch.
In the figure to the left, it helps demonstrate the different sizes that there are for sketching paper. The most commonly used one, is possibly the A1, considering it is almost the equivalent to the common standard for printer paper (8.5 x 11'')
Another thing to keep in mind, is the kind of erasers that you will be using. For example, you might want to use any kind of erasers such as the one below, but might end up making your picture have smudges and shades of grey and black where you don't want them to be. Thus, leads us to go and search for new erasers. If you want to get into the artistic spirit for your sketches, there ends up being a lot more to it than just choosing one eraser over the other. Some things that you want to consider when searching for the perfect eraser is the quality of it. The eraser that I most recommend is the Pentel Hi-Polymer® brand. I personally feel that it is a great brand that makes the eraser be used for multiple tasks. Another brand that I feel is a good one is the Staedtler® Mars® Plastic Eraser, for it provides a great form to erase in corners that otherwise be hard to reach. When using school erasers, you must proceed with caution. School erasers tend to be more rough and harder than what an eraser used for sketching would be.
The last thing that you will need is a place to store both your sketches and your art supplies. You can either buy a case for both uses, or make them yourself. In the video below you will see how to create a case with items that may be located inside of your home, or in a nearby store.
