Arnis Warm-up Exercise, Stance and Basic Strike
Guide Question:
1. What particular physical fitness components that were use in dealing with ARNIS as one of a moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPA)?
Agility – since we need to move our hands, feet and bodies quickly to avoid getting hit
Coordination – our eyes, hands, bodies, and brain need to be coordinated to properly hit our opponents and dodge or block their attacks.
Reaction Time – this is very important in Arnis since you need to react swiftly or else you are going to get hit and get injured
Muscle Strength – you need to be strong to be able to defend against attacks and to attack properly, if you don’t have muscle strength then when the opponent tries to hit you and you defend the Arnis stick might fly away from you’re hands
Muscle Endurance – during Arnis you will be repeatedly attacking and blocking if you don’t have much muscular endurance you will not be able to last long in an Arnis fight/match and will lose
Cardiovascular Endurance – an Arnis fight/match is very tiring so you need to have trained yourself in these component to be able to keep up and fight for prolonged periods of time
Flexibility – you’re body needs to be flexible to be able to reach and block attacks from you’re opponent, an example is if the opponent tries to hit you under your right arm and you cant use your left arm your right arm needs to be flexible to be able to block it
2. What are the basic static and dynamic movements that you may used for the warm-up exercise?
Basic Static Movements – Shoulder Stretch, Upper Back Stretch, Hip and Thigh Stretch, Standing Hamstring Fold Over, Cobra Pose, Seated Butterfly Stretch, Head to Knee Forward Bend
Dynamic Movements – Lunge, Side Shuffle, Leg Swings, Hip Circles, Arm Circles, High Knees, Torso Twists, March and Reach, Hug into Chest Expansion, Front Swings, Side Cross Swings
3. If it will be use as MVPA under the physical fitness components, what specific manipulative movements that can be use for practices in lieu of physical fitness activities?
Manipulative Movements to be used
Striking – in Arnis you will strike your opponents a lot so training in this specific movement will give you a better advantage when attacking, this will also benefit you when doing MVPA because a lot of sports use striking like Arnis, Baseball and more
Lifting – some Arnis sticks are heavy so to be able to lift it and grip it properly without it flying away from your hand you need to train yourself to be able to lift heavy objects with ease, this will also benefit youwhen doing MVPA because many sports require you to be strong like weightlifting, boxing, hiking and mountain climbing
Twirling – this is a great way to train your body to be more flexible so you can easily move your body to be able to dodge, block, counter and find an opening in your opponents, this will help you a lot in MVPA since a lot of sports require your body to be flexible
Throwing – this will greatly increase your capability to throw attacks with force and speed while doing MVPA but for Arnis it may seem to be not helpful but it is since you are basically throwing the stick at your opponents but not letting it go
Catching – this will greatly boost your hand-eye coordination and will be beneficial in Arnis and MVPA since you can respond faster to upcoming objects that are coming right at you
Pushing and Pulling – this will increase both your muscular endurance and muscular strength which is important in MVPA and Arnis
Overview on Arnis
At December 8 2022 during our synchronous time on FITT 3 we watched 3 videos about Arnis in those videos a black belt and a gold medalist Filipino Martial Artist in Arnis taught and showed different techniques about Arnis his name is Daniel Bernas and he got interviewed by Lourd De Veyra and through these videos i understood what Arnis really is, and I think that everyone should watch these 3 videos since it can provide them with knowledge about Arnis not only because it is required in Schools but because it is a very useful skill we can use everyday like in the video he showed us how to defend ourselves which is very beneficial to us in these times, even if its just a stick we can still defend ourselves and get away and I think everyone should learn Arnis not because it’s a requirement in most schools but because it could potentially save your life, not only that Arnis can be used as a medium to perform in the arts, even if it’s a martial art we can still perform it as a form of art, from the beautiful movements, swift strikes, and elegance it can entertain us, Arnis is also a very good form of losing weight because it is requires almost your entire body to properly perform it, the videos I have watched needs to be rebroadcasted in televisions since Arnis is getting almost getting Forgotten by many people, many people underestimate it because it uses sticks to fight instead of a bladed weapons through those videos people can understand that it can be deadly if properly executed, Arnis is one of our cultures so by spreading those videos and many people seeing it we can spread our culture throughout the world, I really think that Arnis is very important to us because it was created by Filipinos and was even used by Lapu Lapu to defend our nation we should be proud of Arnis because it represents our power, our pride, our will to fight, our courage.
If you already have experience with Arnis you should still watch these videos since it provides additional techniques and skills that can help you become more experienced in Arnis, Characteristics like Fluidity of motion, Fast and rapid Strikes and Techniques like Ekis ( X ) where you swipe/strike in an X Motion in front of you, Parry where you counter or block the enemies, Proper blocking techniques and Live hand where you use the other hand without a weapon to Attack/block/counter
Overall I think these videos are very useful and important to us, it shows where we can use Arnis, it shows proper techniques and characteristics, and its history, these type of videos keep Arnis alive it inspires other people to try out Arnis, it gives you pride as a Filipino that we have our own style that we have created a style that was used to defend our country, so I really recommend watching it.
