What’s different about attendance at CVU compared to my last school?
In high school, it is your responsibility to remember your schedule and remember if you have appointments and have to leave early. Your parents/guardians will call or email the house office to let me know if you’re out for the day, coming in late, or need to leave early. Your parents/guardians can also ask me to remind you that you have an appointment. However, the expectation is that you remember your daily schedule and come to the house office for a pass if you need one. If you are unsure, you can always come to the house office and use the student phone to make a call to your parents and find out. More on office phone use below.
Your day will be divided into blocks. There are 4 full-length class blocks, a short advisory or clubs (C3) block, and a short PM Connect block at the end of the day (a chance to connect with teachers if you have questions). During third block, there are several lunch periods, and your lunch period will depend on which class you’re taking.
Between blocks there is a 5 minute passing period.
Block times:
Block 1 (R1/W1) - 8:45-10:00
Advisory/ C3 - 10:05-10:35
Block 2 (R2/W2) - 10:40-11:55
Block 3 (R3/W3 - 12:00-1:40 (A lunch - 12:00-12:25; B lunch 12:25-12:50, C lunch 12:50-1:15, D lunch - 1:15-1:40)
Block 4 (R4/W4) - 1:45-3:00
PM Connect - 3:05-3:20
I’m coming to school late. How do I get a pass to class?
To get a pass, please come to the house office and let me know that you need a pass. If you are coming in late, please let me know if you are just running late or if you have an excused tardy. An excused tardy means one of three things - either your parents let me know that you are running late and that they excuse your lateness, your bus was late, or a teacher or other staff member gave you written permission to be late to class.
When do I need a pass to leave?
You need a pass if you’re leaving during class time. If you’re leaving between classes, you do not need a pass. You can just leave school through the main entrance. However, if the office hasn’t been notified that you’re leaving school, you will be marked absent and your parents/guardians will be notified. If you’re not sure if your parents notified the school that you have to leave early, please stop by the house office to ask me.
When do I need a pass to come in?
You need a pass to come into class if you’re arriving at school during class time. If you’re arriving at school during passing time (between classes), you do not need a pass. HOWEVER, if you don’t stop by the house office, I will not know that you arrived at school. So for example if you were excused from your first block for an appointment but ended up coming to school earlier than you expected, you will still be marked absent. The best way to prevent this is to come to the house office and let me know you arrived, even if it’s between classes and you don’t need a pass.
How do I know if I was marked absent from class?
You can download the PowerSchool App or log on to PowerSchool through the link from the CVU website. On PowerSchool you can see if you were marked absent/ excused absent/ unexcused absent/ excused tardy/ unexcused tardy. If you believe a mistake was made, please come see me in the house office and let me know. You can also email me, and it is best to copy your parents/guardians and the teacher whose class you were marked absent from. This way everyone can quickly chime in to let me know what happened.
Can I leave school if I don’t have classes?
No. Only seniors are allowed to leave school during their free blocks. All other students need to stay in school during free blocks. If your free block is at the end of the day (you have no more classes after it) you can leave school but you are not allowed to come back to school until 3:30 (if you have an afterschool activity).
How do I communicate with my parents/guardians if I can’t use my cellphone at school?
If you need to reach your parents during the school day, you can use the student phone in the house office. If you need help with dialing or with finding a phone number, please ask me. There are instructions printed on the wall in front of the phone. You can also email your parents from your chromebook if you’re allowed to use it during class. To dial from the student phone, dial 9 first and then the number starting with the 802 area code. If you need to call an out of state number, press the LD button and then enter the number starting with the area code (no need for 9 or 1).
I want to go to my friend’s house after school and take the bus with them. What should I do?
Please ask your parent/guardian to call or email the house office to let me know that they give you permission to go on your friend’s bus. Please have them write/say the friend’s name and bus number if you know it. Please come to the house office during PM connect with your friend so I can write you a pass. I suggest stopping by my office earlier in the day to make sure your parent/guardian let me know about the bus request.
