The following are my recommendations for exploratory instruments from reputable vendors. If you are looking to purchase an instrument for use in band or another ensemble, PLEASE go through a reputable vendor and check with your music teacher or band director.
Xylophones and Metalophones:
These EasyCussion instruments are ones we use in music class. (Feel free to search up your own retailer.)
Ukulele
I highly recommend the Makala Sharks and Dolphins and the Kala Waterman Ukes for beginners.
The Sharks and Dolphins have a wood front with a single piece plastic back and sides. They keep in tune really well and sound great for the price!
The Waterman is a fully plastic uke that can be played literally anywhere absent of extreme heat - my daughter has had one since she was two and it's taken many a fall and lived to sing about it.
If you want something wooden or more advanced, I recommend these brands, but Music & Arts in Burlington has a lovely selection and live people to help!
This is the recorder we use for 4th Grade. There is a classroom set and students are not expected to have one at home. If they want one, this is what we use. If you purchase elsewhere or a different brand, please get a Baroque fingering recorder (recorders come in German fingering as well and we don't teach that at school.)
A few local businesses carry these as well - The toy store next to Target in the UMall, Music & Arts in Burlington can order for you, and Ellis often has recorders in stock. You do not need to get these exact brands if you want an instrument for home!
Drums and Percussion!
Has your child come home raving about Boomwhackers? Do you have a budding Ringo Starr banging on pots and pans?
This is a link to a huge number of percussion instruments - many of them are in our music rooms!
