2nd Period: Combined Band
3rd Period: 6th Grade Orchestra
4th Period: 6th Grade Band
5th Period: Combined Orchestra
6th Period: 7/8 Music Lab
Ensemble Classes will be broken up into: Music Literacy, Fundamentals, New Skills, and Literature Work. This daily routine allows for tremendous growth!
Ensemble Classes grading involves the following items: Rehearsal Skills (50%), Concert Reflections (25%), and Practice/Pass Off Assignments (25%).
The rehearsal skills portion is a daily point system with a rubric involving all of the things it takes to be a great musician in a rehearsal. Concert reflections happen after a concert, and are a moment to look back on all of the work we did, and practice/pass offs are weekly logs and skill checks that give you an opportunity to show your current abilities! The log will be handed out weekly, due on monday of the next week. Pass offs are a "take it until you get it right" assignment. They will not always be a "nail it on the first try" and that is okay! Failure is part of growth, and full credit is always available.
Music Lab is an "exploratory" option for 7th and 8th graders that looks into a lot of different topics in music. It is a non-ensemble course, and most of the information about that course will be handled via google classroom. The course is graded through projects and assignments around student's musical interests.
Attendance and Make Ups
Attendance in class is essential. We are an ensemble class that relies on every member. When we start instruments, you need to be fully set up within 2 minutes of the bell (by the time Mr. Newbill steps onto the podium).
Making up work is easy in music, just come talk to me before or after school and we can do any missed playing tests or pass offs.
ASB Fee
The HMS Music Department utilizes the ASB Funds for travel, festival registration, instrument and material scholarships, and to support the purchase of additional Music Department gear. In order to guarantee continued use of these resources students should pay their $20 ASB fee as soon as possible. This fee only needs to be paid once per year and students participating in sports need not pay it twice.

I believe music and music education are lifelong passions and pursuits. The skills learned in the music classroom transfer seamlessly into other aspects of life. Skills such as: teamwork and collaboration, exposure and respect for new cultures, passion and determination, and learning to fail while maintaining positivity are all incredible aspects of a music education. Becoming comfortable and confident in yourself is the ultimate goal of a well-rounded music education. I have the utmost respect for student's and their individuality. When you join our Hawk music family you bring so much value and leave a lasting impact on the program!
