Why rent an instrument?
Stringed instruments are designed to be the correct size for the student–and students grow! Purchasing an instrument that is too large as an investment or to try and save money can cause long term physical damage to young musicians. This is similar to buying shoes three sizes too big knowing that eventually your student will “grow into them”... after many sprained ankles!
Many music stores have rental plans that include instrument insurance for dings, dents, broken strings, broken bows, etc. If you purchase, you will pay out of pocket many times what you may have purchased the instrument for.
Renting an instrument means that you are not saddled with an instrument your student may not like in a year or two’s time. You can swap for a different instrument, or return it with no extra hassle of selling it.
Some music stores also allow you to use your monthly rent towards purchasing an instrument in the future. You’re not throwing money away, you are investing in a future, quality instrument without the burden of additional maintenance costs for the current one!
Here is a video made a few years ago (when orchestra started in 6th grade) that you can check out to help you decide!
