DANCE SKILLS: You will be learning a Hip Hop, Dance, and Pom routine during the week of tryouts. We will be looking at your strength in movement, showmanship, execution, how you blend in a large group, and ability to recover when you make mistakes. You will perform the routines in front of the judges on Friday - we are NOT looking at you to perfectly execute the routine, we are purposefully going to push you to learn a lot in a short amount of time and want to see your work ethic over everything :)
Dance team requires someone with a team mindset. We will have members with no experience to members who have danced their entire lives! If you understand music, are flexible, have great dance technique, or just an awesome 'I can do' attitude - every member has a strength they are bringing to our team
In order to make the VARSITY Hip Hop, Dance or Pom team, you need to have a combination of technique, stunting/tricks, and dance skills! A Junior Varsity team will be built depending on numbers. To perform Pom or Hip Hop at games, assemblies, etc., you do not have to be on Varsity.
How many members will you take on the team?
We do not have a set number in mind - our final number is solely based on how many have great work ethic, attitude and final performance in front of the judges at tryouts!
How many members will you take on the team?
We will have guest judges from the dance world including coaches and/or dance teachers! Your CV coaches are not judging your performance on tryout day.
How often will we practice?
During our off-season, we will practice 2-3 days/week in the evenings
During our competitive season, we will practice 3-4 days/week in the evenings
Any conflicts must be approved by coach prior to practice
What does the season look like?
Dance team is a HUGE commitment, similar to other sports and activities; we are considered a Winter sport. During the summer and fall, we will be training for competition season, practicing technique, performing at football games, and learning our competitive routine. During our official Winter season, we will compete locally at nearby Spokane high schools in December- March, and travel across the state for away competitions.
Are there summer commitments?
Yes - we have summer camps and trainings, but you will work around family trips and other commitments during this time!
Will we have captains?
Yes! There will be an application process and a voting process. Upper classmen (juniors and seniors) on VARSITY will have the opportunity to be captains.
What do we wear to competitions?
Coaches will order costumes!
Warm ups - you will check out a warm up jacket and wear leggings.
Makeup - yes, we will wear competition makeup and it will be consistent across the team
Hair - we will all have the same (or similar) hairstyle - we will never wear our hair fully down :)
What do we wear to practice?
We will have practice shirts with our CVDT logo, and the rest you must supply (ONLY CV colors- Black/White preferred, Black spandex/tights, leggings, and practice dance shoes - contemporary half shoe, jazz shoe, or dance paws) and NO JEWELRY or long nails during competition season - this is a mandatory safety rule
What categories do we compete in?
This year, we will be competing in the Dance, Hip Hop, and Pom category
Where/when will CVDT compete?
We will compete at local high schools (Ferris HS, Rogers HS, Shadle Park HS, etc.) and may travel within a few hours to Moses Lake HS and Chiawana. February/March is the heat of competition season - we have Districts and State in Yakima, WA. We will have a bus to the Yakima Sundome the last weekend of March.
Our first competition will be in December/January, ending in March!
What is state?
Our state championship competition is at the Yakima Sundome every year at the end of March. At districts, if we get a qualifying score, we will compete at state. It is a 2 day trip and we stay the night and plan team bonding activities! The day of the competition it is an ALL DAY event (12+ hours) of practice and competing, typically until 7pm, and we will stay the night after your performances. It will be exhausting AND incredibly memorable!
Can I participate in other sports/activities?
We have members who participate in other sports and activities in our less competitive season! You cannot participate in another Winter sport. We will perform at games in the fall and winter.
More information will be shared at the information night :)
