Conference - B days 8:45-10:00 am

Course Description

Channelview Advanced Academics Program - Chemistry is a two-semester advanced chemistry course which provides an in-depth overview of chemical concepts. The purpose of the CAAP course is to prepare students for AP, On-Ramps, or college-level chemistry.

Students will explore the fundamental principles of chemistry which characterize the properties of matter and how it reacts. Computer-based and traditional laboratory techniques are used to obtain, organize and analyze data. Topics include, but are not limited to: measurement, atomic structure, electron configuration, the periodic table, bonding, gas laws, properties of liquids and solids, solutions, stoichiometry, reactions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and nuclear chemistry.

**Homework/studying outside of normal class times will be required.**

Grading

55% Tests & Projects

45% Daily Work

Test dates are fluid, but it is a safe assumption students will have a test about every 3 weeks. Advance notice will be given in class and posted in Google Classroom.

Required Materials

Composition notebook

Scientific calculator (preferably a TI-30XS but is not necessary)

Chromebook

Nitrile Gloves

Binder

Labs

Participation in lab activities is a privilege. Safety will be the number one priority and any violation of good safety practices will result in removal from the lab and a zero for the assignment. It is expected that the student will also be prepared for the lab activity, and students who are not dressed properly or have not completed the pre-lab assignment will not participate in the lab and will be given an alternate assignment.

Tardies

Tardies will be strictly enforced according to the district/campus policy outlined in the student handbook. Students are expected to be in the classroom and preparing for class when the tardy bell rings, and students more than 20 minutes late will be counted absent. This includes 1st and 2nd periods.

Use of Online Applications/Electronic Devices

I use a combination of online/virtual/digital activities and traditional paper/pencil and students will be expected to bring their fully-charged chromebook to class every day.  This will be enforced according to the district’s 1:1 Policy. All assignments (online and paper) will be posted on Google Classroom for easy tracking.  All assignments (including paper) can be turned in online if needed. Just scan the paper as a pdf and attach the pdf to the assignment in Google Classroom and “turn in.”  It does need to be in pdf format.  Apps like GeniusScan use the phone camera to scan a document and convert it to pdf.

Student cell phones should be on silent and put away during class time.

Late Work

Late work is accepted, but ten points will be deducted for every day it is late, including later that day. Please note that is every “day” not every “class day.”  After 10 days have passed, that assignment will no longer be accepted.  If an assignment was due on Friday, September 2, and was turned in on Monday, September 5th, 40 points would be deducted.  Again, digital submissions are accepted where possible, and early submissions are always accepted.

Makeup Exams

If a student fails an exam and chooses to make it up, the student is required to see me after school for additional help, to make corrections to the original test, and/or retake the test.  Specifics on the corrections and tutorial schedules will be given in class and will likely vary by student and by topic.  Other arrangements can be made if required.

Absences

If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to find what they missed (in Google Classroom) and make up the assignment or activity as soon as possible. All assignments are posted in Google Classroom and if a student is absent, that assignment is expected to be turned in the next class day after their return to school.  Videos, reading material, and/or outlines for notes will be posted in Classroom for absent students to catch up.

If a student is absent on the due date of an assignment, the student is expected to turn in the assignment immediately upon their return to class, if not sooner since electronic submissions are accepted.

Extra Credit

Each student will be issued six hall passes each 9 week period. Once passes are used up, permission to leave the classroom will only be granted in extreme emergencies. Students must ask for permission to leave the classroom for any reason, even if using a hall pass.  Extra credit is offered at the end of the 9 Weeks for any unused passes.

Other extra credit will be offered every 9 weeks, usually in the form of supplies or a small project.

Academic Integrity/Cheating/Plagiarism

Sharing answers for any assignments or assessments is strictly forbidden, unless otherwise noted. Anyone caught cheating (copying answers from another student, googling answers, etc) will receive a discipline referral and a zero for the assignment or test. This includes students who provide their own work for others to copy. Cheating and plagiarism will absolutely not be tolerated.

Tutorials

Tutorials are offered throughout the science department on Thursday afternoons from 2:35 to 3:30pm. If a student needs assistance, they are welcome to attend tutorials with me or any other teacher during those times.  However, I am generally available after school every day, and I am willing to meet virtually from home if requested.
