Hello! My name is Jakob Walker, and I am in my fifth year of teaching. I have had the pleasure of teaching both 7th and 6th grade, and currently, I am dedicated to the 6th-grade World Cultures at Anthony Aguirre Junior High.
I am an active member of the AVID Site Team, contributing to the success of our AVID National Demonstration Campus. My academic background includes a Bachelor's Degree in History and a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in Social Education, from the University of Houston. I aspire to further my education by earning a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, focusing on Learning Design and Technology.
In my teaching philosophy, I believe in the power of a Growth Mindset to help students learn and grow. I know that every student has the ability to do well in school if they're willing to work hard. This idea is at the heart of how I teach and how my students experience learning.
I understand that learning isn't just about getting the right answers. It's about the journey of getting there. I create a safe and welcoming classroom where students feel comfortable trying new things and making mistakes. By focusing on a Growth Mindset, I show my students that they can get smarter and better at things by trying, practicing, and not giving up, even when things are tough.
I want my students to feel confident and proud of their progress. So, I give them helpful feedback on their work, pointing out what they're doing well and where they can improve. By celebrating their achievements and encouraging them to believe in their potential, I motivate them to aim high and reach their goals.
I'm convinced that when students face challenges, they can discover how capable they really are. With engaging lessons that suit each student's needs, I create a class where they can explore new ideas, work together with classmates, and think critically. By making learning enjoyable and showing students they have a role in their education, I'm guiding them to become lifelong learners who embrace new opportunities and follow their interests.
To sum it up, my teaching philosophy is about nurturing a Growth Mindset in students. By creating a supportive space, giving helpful feedback, and inspiring them to step out of their comfort zones, I'm helping them unlock their potential and develop a lifelong love for learning.
