Colonials take CHARGE represents the Conewago Valley School District's shared values or expectations. The Conewago Valley School District community believes in partnering with families to facilitate Committed, Honest, Adaptable, Respectful, Generous, and Engaged learners. Shared expectations is one feature of a three tier framework for improving social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for youth. That framework is known as School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (SW-PBIS). CVIS has been recognized by the state of Pennsylvania for successful implementation of PBIS at ALL THREE TIERS of support! Way to go CVIS!
The SWPBIS Team is the building leadership team for all PBIS initiatives. The team reviews building-wide data on a monthly basis in order to identify strengths and needs for our building. Should data indicate a need for intervention, our team develops a goal and plan of action to improve positive outcomes for students. Team members include an instructional aide, at least one teacher from each grade level, a special education teacher, school counselors, the school psychologist, and our administrators. The team meets two times a month for 30 minutes throughout the school year.

At Conewago Valley Intermediate School, the PBIS Team is committed to supporting a safe and welcoming environment that nurtures the academic and social-emotional well being of the school community in order to become confident, competent, and creative builders of the future.
The following supports are available to all students:
CHARGE lessons (beginning of year and middle of year)
The Strengthening Families Program (Center For Youth and Community Development/Collaborating For Youth)
Guidance lessons 1x/cycle
Class Meetings
Faculty and staff teach, model, and practice the district-wide expectations and rules for every setting of our school building using lessons created by our PBIS leadership team. The District Teaching Matrix below is a guide for those lessons.
As students demonstrate C.H.A.R.G.E. expectations, our staff acknowledge their positive behavior with paper tickets. Faculty and staff give WHITE tickets as they see students being committed, honest, adaptable, respectful, generous, or engaged throughout classrooms and the school building. CVIS bus drivers hand out YELLOW tickets when students follow expectations on transportation. Cafeteria staff and supervisors give students PURPLE tickets for demonstrating CHARGE in the cafeteria. Staff pull student purple tickets on Fun Fridays in the cafeteria. Student win coupons for free ice cream, a free side dish, first out to recess coupon, etc.
Students can exchange white and yellow tickets for tangible rewards (biweekly) or social activities (monthly). Our C.H.A.R.G.E. Cart operates on a rotating schedule where each homeroom class has the opportunity to purchase items approximately twice a month. The C.H.A.R.G.E. social activities are led by PBIS team members on a monthly basis.

The Behavior Support Team includes our school counselors, school psychologist, and administrative team. The purpose of this team is to identify students in need of additional support beyond what is offered in Tier 1 through a weekly review of building wide data and parent or teacher referrals. Team members include all three school counselors, the school psychologist, and our administrators.
The Check In/Check Out (CICO) program is an intervention available to students making mild behavioral errors in the classroom. The program is designed to increase the amount of positive and encouraging attention from the adults that students interact with each day. Every morning, our CICO team provides a warm welcome to students and distributes their Daily Progress Report (pictured below). Throughout the day, teachers provide positive and constructive feedback to encourage students to demonstrate the C.H.A.R.G.E. expectations. The CICO team provides praise and small rewards at the end of each day to those meeting their daily goals.
Homework Club (HWC) is a group led by our fourth grade school counselor, Mrs. Abigail Reichart. She and several staff members offer CVIS students a supportive, positive, non-stressful atmosphere to complete homework or prepare for upcoming assessments. The HWC runs daily from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Please contact Mrs. Reichart should you have questions, or complete the permission form below.
The Good Morning Club is a group for students who may need more support to attend school regularly. Each morning, our school counselors warmly greet these students with a smile and positive message. As students improve their attendance, they are provided small rewards.
During student lunches, our school counselors offer a setting for groups of students to meet and connect with their peers to improve positive social interactions and help to build skills needed for maintaining friendships.
Students in our Bus Bunch group need more supervision and support to demonstrate C.H.A.R.G.E. expectations on our school buses. Each day, our drivers provide feedback to students which is shared with school staff. As students meet expectations, staff reinforce their efforts with small rewards.
The Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a team process used to mobilize school resources to remove barriers to learning. SAP is designed to assist in identifying issues including alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and mental health issues which pose a barrier to a student’s success. The primary goal of the Student Assistance Program is to help students overcome these barriers so that they may achieve, advance, and remain in school.
The Colonial Academy is a 12-week (minimally), general education program designed to support student adjustment or reintegration in the school community following social-emotional-behavioral challenges or mental health programming. The teacher, Mrs. Kelly Craig, is PA certified and has an extensive history of working with this population of students.
For students with the most challenging behavior, our Tier 3 team includes home, school, and community members who complete Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) in order to develop Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP). This team designs interventions to target the antecedents, explicitly teach replacement behaviors, and address the function of the challenging behaviors.
If you think your child would benefit from additional support beyond what is offered to all students, please contact your child's school counselor:
