Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I view grades?

Grades are viewed by logging in to the Aeries Parent Portal. You'll need your email address and password. If you need help accessing your account you can choose "Forgot Password". If that doesn't work, see Mrs. Lum in the office.

When and how can I discuss my grades with Mr. O?

Students that want to discuss grades with Mr. O should visit Mr. O after school during office hours or during RTI. Mr. O does not discuss grades outside of these times.

Adults wishing to discuss grades should send their student to talk to Mr. O first. If the student does not come back with a sufficient answer families should email to schedule a phone call with Mr. O.

Mr. O does not schedule phone calls about grades during the last week of the quarter.

What do my your grades mean?

Grades in our class are based on progress towards standards rather than a traditional "points" system. This means that you will only earn credit towards your grade for showing that you can do the skills we learn in class.

To put it simply, in order to get a good grade in my class you have to show me that you are learning the English skills I am teaching you. Turning in assignments that don't show that you're learning skills won't earn you any credit.

Can I turn in late work?

Yes! Late work can be turned in until two weeks after a unit ends. Mr. O will notify students when deadlines are approaching.

Turning work in late may result in consequences such as an email home or being assigned to additional learning opportunities such as RTI, Homework Club, or after-school detentions

Mr. O stops accepting assignments one week before the end of the quarter so get those things turned in on time! Remember, timely assignments get timely grades!

When and how do I turn in late/make-up work?

To turn in something that was done in your notebook, come see Mr. O during a study hall RTI or during office hours.

To turn in something that was passed in, put it in the late work bucket on the back counter.

To turn in something that was submitted online, just do the assignment and Mr. O will review it before the end of the quarter.

Do I lose points for turning work in late?

Absolutely not!

The work you do is worthy of the grade that it earns, no questions asked. My rule for late work is simple: timely assignments get timely grades. If you turn in an entire quarter worth of work the day that grades close I might not have time to grade it. Turn in late work at your own risk.

When will you grade my late work?

My rule for late work is simple: timely assignments get timely grades.

If you turn in your work late it will be graded after I finish grading all on-time assignments.

This means that it could be several weeks before I get to your late work. If I don't have time to grade late work before the end of the quarter you don't get credit for the assignment.

Turn in late work at your own risk.

Office Hours

If you need attention from Mr. O during class time you can see him during office hours during the first 15 minutes after the end of the school day.

I have to miss class for some reason...

Call the Canyon attendance office and report the absence. They can be reached via the attendance reporting line by calling the Absence Reporting Line: (510) 538-8833 extension 9180.

When you're able, review the slides for the day which can be found on the class calendar and under the classwork tab in Google Classroom. Also, start on the assignments posted on our class calendar and Google Classroom.

If students need help catching up they should request an RTI session with Mr. O or stop by the classroom at the end of the day.

All make-up work is due one week before the end of the quarter but should be completed as soon as possible. If you're overwhelmed by makeup work, ask me for help and I'll let you know what is most important to makeup.

Mr. O cannot help you with make-up work during class, if you need help see Mr. O during his office hours.

What materials do I need for class?

The materials that students should have for class each day are listed on the syllabus. If you'd like to purchase supplies to donate to our classroom you can do that on my Amazon Wishlist.

Do you offer extra credit?

No. Come to an RTI session and work with Mr. O to revise an assignment in order to improve a grade. Mr. O does not accept assignment redos outside of RTI.
